Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Department of Performing Arts and TNCC Players will present Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music” at the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium (MTCA), Templin Hall, on the Hampton campus. Performances will take place June 15-17 and June 22-24 at 8:00 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3:00 p.m. Sundays.

TNCC’s Department of Performing Arts and TNCC Players present three productions annually. The upcoming musical is the College’s largest production to date with more than 50 cast members, including students, faculty, staff and members of the community. “Our cast [is] really talented and we’re just so proud of them. They do amazing work, and I think the audience is going to be in for a real treat,” said Michael Sundblad, Chair of TNCC’s Department of Music and Performing Arts.

Made famous by the Broadway musical and 1965 film, “The Sound of Music” chronicles the journey of Maria, a rebellious nun, and the Von Trapp family, a widowed captain and his seven children. After attempting to change the rules at the convent, Maria is urged to leave the convent to work as a governess for the Von Trapps.

The event will feature poetry readings, a capella and acoustic musical performances unaided by the use of electronic devices.  The event titled, “BE HERE NOW”, has been proposed and planned by TNCC journalism students and faculty concerned with the growing dependence upon digital media for both formal and informal interpersonal communication.
