Thirty-Eight U.S. Navy Students to Graduate from TNCC Medical Technology Laboratory Program

VIRGINIA PENINSULA – On Wednesday, August 6, at 9:00 a.m., thirty-eight U.S. Navy Sailors will graduate from the Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) Program at Thomas Nelson Community College. The graduating students will receive the TNCC Medical Laboratory Technician Certificate and will be awarded the Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) HM 8506.  The ceremony will take place on the TNCC Hampton campus in Templin Hall. Captain Susan E. Herron, NC, USN, Commanding Officer of the Naval School of Health Sciences Portsmouth, Va. and Dr. Charles A. Taylor will be addressing the graduating class.

In addition to the HM 8506 NEC, 12 of the graduating students have also completed the requirements in Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS) and will be receiving degrees in Medical Laboratory Technology.

Thirty-Five U.S. Navy Students Graduate from Med Lab Technology Program at TNCC

On Wednesday, February 7 at 9:00 a.m., 35 U.S. Navy students, nine of which are foreign-born members serving in the military, will be graduating from the Medical Laboratory Technology Program at Thomas Nelson Community College. The ceremony will take place at the Mary T. Christian Auditorium on the College’s Hampton campus with keynote speaker CDR Christine L. Howe, Senior Laboratory Officer, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Va.

Foreign-born members in this graduating class represent Yemen, Liberia, Germany, Ecuador, Haiti, Guyana, Nigeria, Philippines and Ghana. Based on the special provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), the foreign-born military members’ applications for citizenship was streamlined and expedited. In addition, as of October 1, 2004 when President Bush signed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2004, members of the U.S. Armed Forces do not pay a fee when filing for citizenship. Therefore, military service members are exempt from other naturalization requirements outlined in the INA.

U.S. Navy Students to Graduate from Medical Laboratory Technology Program at TNCC

On Wednesday, August 8, at 9:00 a.m., 37 U.S. Navy students, some of who are part of the Navy’s new Perform to Serve program, will be graduating from the Medical Laboratory Technology Program at Thomas Nelson Community College. The ceremony will take place at the Mary T. Christian Auditorium on the College’s Hampton campus with keynote speaker CDR Jean T. Scherrer, Director of Clinical Support Services, Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Va.

The U.S. Navy’s Perform to Serve program allows Sailors in other rates like Operation Specialist (OS), Master-at-Arms (MA), Boatswain’s Mate (BM), etc. with no prior medical experience to transfer or “cross-rate” into the Navy Hospital Corps and acquire Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) in critically understaffed areas.

Six of the Graduating Students Served as Hospital Corpsmen in Iraq and Afghanistan:
The Virginia Peninsula – On Wednesday, August 9, at 8:30 a.m., 32 U.S. Navy students will be graduating from the Medical Laboratory Technology Program at Thomas Nelson Community College. The ceremony will take place at the Mary T. Christian Auditorium on the Thomas Nelson Hampton campus.

Six of the graduating students served in Iraq and Afghanistan supporting the U.S. Marine Corps as hospital corpsmen prior to convening for school at Thomas Nelson Community College. Hospital corpsmen play a key role in rendering emergency medical treatment to U.S. Marines in a combat environment. Upon graduation, these U.S. Navy students will be sent around the world to serve as Med Lab Technicians in U.S. Navy facilities where medical laboratories are available.

The Virginia Peninsula – On Thursday, February 9, at 8:30 a.m., thirty-two U.S. Navy students will graduate from the Medical Technology Laboratory Program at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC). The ceremony will take place at the Dr. Mary T . Christian Auditorium on the Hampton campus. CAPT Tom McGue, USN, Deputy Commander of the Naval Medical Education and Training Command in Bethesda, MD, will be addressing the graduating class. This is the thirteenth class to graduate from TNCC since the U.S. Navy first awarded the contract to TNCC in 1999.

The graduating students will receive the TNCC Medical Laboratory Technician Certificate and will be awarded the Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) HM 8506. In addition, fourteen students will be receiving their Associate in Applied Science degrees in Medical Laboratory. This is the largest number of students in a MLT graduating class to complete the requirements for their associate degrees. The average registry exam pass rate for the last three MLT graduating classes is 86%, the highest in the nation.
