Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Health Department invites TNCC students interested in healthcare careers to an informative presentation by Riverside School of Health Careers. Set for Wednesday, October 10 at 5 p.m. on the Hampton campus in Moore Hall’s Espada Room, the presentation will highlight three careers — radiology technician, surgical technician and physical therapy.

The two-hour session will include a brief overview of each educational program and professionals in the three featured fields will discuss their career experiences and address students’ questions. The presentation will conclude with an overview of the job shadowing program Riverside School of Health Careers provides. Mark your calendar to attend the annual TNCC Job Fair at the at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center, 600 Butler Farm Road in Hampton, Virginia.

This Fair connects qualified jobseekers with the region’s top employers. Since many employers conduct on-site interviews, participants are strongly encouraged to wear professional dress and to bring extra copies of their resumes.

Middle College Expands to Williamsburg

Workforce Development now offers the Middle College program in Williamsburg. The free program prepares young adults ages 18-24 years for in-demand careers as they earn their GED. Classes take place at TNCC’s Historic Triangle campus is Williamsburg. Available training includes Nurse Aide, Welding, HVAC, Medical Coding and Billing, Automotive, and more.

Middle College offers young adults who have not completed high school opportunities and employment training. In less than eight weeks, students can earn their GED and enroll in college via this innovative initiative. Since the program’s inception in 2009, TNCC has graduated several students and put them on the pathway to a rewarding career.

New Kathy Lynn Camper Scholarship

The Virginia Foundation for Community College Education is accepting applications for its Kathy Camper Legacy Scholarship. The scholarship will award $3,500 each to two students from throughout Virginia’s 23 community colleges. The deadline to apply is July 1.

The scholarship supports students seeking degrees in Information Technology or Childhood Education and honors the late Kathleen “Kathy” Lynn Camper, a long-time information technology staff member with the VCCS.

Nursing Scholarship Program Offering Paid Tuition, Fees, Plus Salary and Benefits

The Nursing Scholarship Program (NSP) aims to help alleviate a critical shortage of registered nurses in the United States. The NSP provides scholarships to nursing students in exchange for a minimum two year full-time service commitment (or part-time equivalent), at an eligible health care facility with a critical shortage of nurses. The NSP covers tuition, eligible fees and other related expenses including books and supplies, as well as a monthly stipend for $1, 289 for the 2011-12 school year. Those fulfilling their service commitment will be eligible to receive a competitive salary and benefits package, negotiable with the employing facility. The program is accepting applications through June 1.
