Eight-Week Class Session at TNCC Offers Opportunity to Start or Continue Education This Spring

Classes Start Saturday, March 14

It’s not too late to start spring classes at Thomas Nelson Community College. A new eight-week accelerated session starts Saturday, March 14. Take classes at the Hampton campus, the Historic Triangle campus in Williamsburg and at the Southeast Higher Education Center located at An Achievable Dream Middle and High School in Newport News. Day, evening weekend and online classes are available. Visit www.tncc.edu for a complete list of classes.

Students can register online at www.tncc.edu, or in person during the following times: Monday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 208, Griffin Hall on the Hampton campus and in Building 161-A at the Historic Triangle campus. Tuition payment for the eight-week class session is due at the time of registration.

Over 60 TNCC Students in TRiO Program Are High Achievers for Fall

Sixty-three Thomas Nelson Community College students who are enrolled in the TRiO Program  earned 3.0 or above grade point averages (GPAs) in fall 2008.  Of that figure, 18 students achieved perfect GPAs of 4.0 marking another successful chapter in program’s brief history at TNCC.

Also among the 63 students, 20 had GPAs of 3.5 or greater and 25 earned GPAs ranging from 3.0 to 3.49, according to Virginia Keithley, TNCC’s TRiO director.   Further, 80 percent of fall 2007 students in TRiO at TNCC returned to begin classes in fall 2008.

TNCC pushes for 2010 startup date for dental hygiene program

Thomas Nelson Community College officials continue to fast track their planned dental hygiene program toward starting in August of 2010. “We’re in the process of hiring a director now,” said Richard Fleming, TNCC vice president for academic affairs.

Tentative plans called for the director to be hired by November and for that person to start working in March. But the search had to be reopened. “The committee has been formed, and will start getting together to review applications,” Fleming said. “We hope to have somebody on by February, but more likely it will be March.

TNCC Dual Enrollment Increasingly Popular

Taking college-level courses, on campus or at a high school, gives students a head start.

If getting a jump start on college courses doesn’t appeal to high school students, it’s possible the reduced price grabs their parents’ attention.

Those two selling points have made a program called dual enrollment increasingly popular at Thomas Nelson Community College. It allows students to take college-level courses either in high school or on campus, and to potentially earn both high school and college credit.

Mary Baldwin Center Provides Additional Educational Opportunities for Adult Students

A unique educational partnership between Thomas Nelson Community College and the Mary Baldwin College (MBC) Adult Degree Program is giving Peninsula residents the opportunity to pursue their education at the four-year college. The first 10 students to enroll at MBC’s newest regional center at TNCC will start taking classes this fall semester. The deadline to apply for admission is August 15.

Mary Baldwin College opened its sixth center for adult and graduate studies at TNCC last fall. Dr. Jean Fleming is the Center’s Director and Academic Advisor. She is available full time to help students plan and achieve their higher education goals. Courses are offered through independent study, online, and in group classes locally so that students can complete their degrees without leaving the area.
