TNCC Chorus Presents Spring Concert, April 25

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Concert Choir will present a spring concert Thursday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Templin Hall, Hampton campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

The performance will feature works by Palestrina, Moses Hogan and Richard Rodgers.

Michael Sundblad, Chair of TNCC’s Department of Music and Performing Arts, will serve as conductor. Pianist Nancy Verry will accompany the vocalists.

The performance is made possible with the support of the TNCC Educational Foundation, City of Hampton, Hampton Arts Commission, Newport News Arts Commission and the City of Newport News. Local Ensemble and Orchestra Present Holiday Concerts at TNCC

Two concerts at Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Hampton campus in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium will usher in the holiday season.

The Chesapeake Bay Wind Ensemble will present “Hampton Roads Holly Days” on Saturday, December 8 at 7:30 p.m. Lead by conductors Jim Paschall and Robert Arledge, the ensemble will perform an array of the season’s standards. Free for children under 18, tickets will be available for $5 at the door or can be purchased online at www.cbwe.org.

On Sunday, December 9 at 3 p.m., the York River Symphony Orchestra will bring “Glad Tidings.” Lead by Conductor Dr. Eric Reiff and Assistant Conductor Clint Correll, musicians will perform Ellenberg’s Peterbourgh Sleigh Ride, Herbison’s The Good King and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1, Movement 4 and other holiday classics. TNCC Brings Horror to the Stage with ‘Dracula’

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Department of Performing Arts and TNCC Players will present William McNulty’s adaptation of “Dracula” at the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium (MTCA), Templin Hall, on the Hampton campus. The show opens Friday, April 13 with performances at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. on Sundays through Sunday, April 22.

Based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, this horror brims over with action, superhuman strength and mystical powers as a professor leads efforts to hunt down the evil Count Dracula. The brave hunters face frustration as Dracula employs his powers to outsmart them and hamper their search. The climax of the familiar tale finds the hunters and vampires face-to-face in a chilling confrontation.

Benefit Concert for the TNCC Performing Arts Program

Thomas Nelson Community College hosts a benefit concert, wine and dessert event on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium in Templin Hall on the Hampton Campus. Featuring The Windsor Trio, the event will benefit TNCC’s Performing Arts Program. Broadcast journalist Don Roberts of WAVY TV 10 is the master of ceremonies.

During the occasion, TNCC will officially dedicate its new Steinway grand piano, a contribution from the Sloane Family Foundation and the Hampton Roads Community Foundation.

Musical Fantasy ‘Cinderella’ to be Performed at TNCC

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Performing Arts department and the TNCC Players present the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, “Cinderella,” on the Hampton campus in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Templin Hall. The show runs Nov. 11-13 and Nov.18-20 with performances at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 3 p.m. Sundays.

The musical production was originally written for television, with music by acclaimed composer Richard Rodgers and a book and lyrics by renowned songwriter Oscar Hammerstein, II. Based on the fairy tale Cinderella, it is the story of a young woman forced into a life of servitude by her cruel stepmother and ego-maniacal stepsisters. Aided by a fairy godmother, Cinderella is transformed into a princess and finds her prince.

Tickets will be available at the door and are $10 for students, military and senior citizens and $15 for the public.

New TNCC Theater classes for the Fall 2011 semester

The TNCC Performing Arts Department is pleased to announce two brand new theater classes for Fall semester.

CST 145 – Stagecraft (Prof. Torre Sanders)

Have you ever wanted to know what goes on “behind the scenes” in theater? Stagecraft covers the basics of theater construction, lighting, sound and costuming. Come learn how to swing a hammer, turn a wrench, and paint a flat. Student lab work will include working as backstage and booth crew for MTCA productions.

(3 credits) Prerequisite(s): ENG 03 and ENG 05 and MTH 01 and MTH 03 if required by individual student’s placement. Acquaints the student with fundamental methods, materials, and techniques of set construction for the stage. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

CST 131 – Acting I (Prof. Sandra Calderón-Garza)

(3 credits) Prerequisite(s): ENG 03, ENG 05 if required by individual student’s placement. Develops personal resources and explores performance skills through such activities as theatre games, role playing, improvisation, work on basic script units, and performance of scenes. Part I of II. Lecture 2 hours + lab 3 hours = total 5 hours per week.
