TNCC’s Observes Women’s History Month Beginning March 10

Throughout March, TNCC will participate in a statewide celebration called, “Minds Wide Open: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts” in observance of Women’s History Month. The first celebration of its kind in Virginia, “Minds Wide Open” will focus on the artistic and cultural contributions of women. Thousands of performances and displays are expected statewide during the celebration, according to the website http://vamindswideopen.org/.

At TNCC, the Cultural Affairs Committee will sponsor a series of performances and lectures scheduled as follows:

British Photographer to Lecture At TNCC Oct. 29

Thomas Nelson Community College’s Cultural Affairs in partnership with the Mariners’ Museum brings British photographer Andy Hughes to the Hampton campus this month for an informative lecture about his craft. Free and open to the public the presentation called “An Evening with Andy Hughes” comes to the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Templin Hall, Thursday October 29 at 7:00 p.m.

Hughes’ work reflects a concern with the ocean, beach and environmental issues. See some of his breathtaking photographs in an exhibit called “Message in a Bottle/Dominant Wave Theory” now showing through January 2010 at the Mariners’ Museum in Newport News. The exhibit also features works by photographer Chris Jordan.

TNCC Faculty Member Honored by Region’s Cultural Arts Community

Thomas Nelson Community College faculty member Shar Wolff has received the Bettie Minette Cooper Arts Educator Award.  The photography department head was acknowledged on Nov. 9 among honorees at the 2008 Alli Awards at the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.

Presented annually by the Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads, the Alli Awards celebrate contributions in the past year to the local arts community by individuals, businesses and the media.

Thomas Nelson Photography Students Connect with Elders for Unique Exhibit

Fourteen Thomas Nelson Community College photography students will showcase their works on Friday, November 3 in a unique exhibit at a Newport News retirement community, Assisted Living at Warwick Forest. Scheduled for 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the 866 Denbigh Blvd. facility, the exhibit is free and open to the public.

The exhibit coincides with an Alzheimer’s benefit to support the Alzheimer’s Association and all donations will be welcomed during the event, according to Derek Eley, a Thomas Nelson Photography Instructor and project coordinator. Eley is collaborating on this project with Warwick Forest Activity Coordinator Regina Morris.  The photo array entitled, “Picture This,” features portraits of Warwick Forest residents who posed for students as clients.

TNCC Students Win Awards at PFAC Genesis 2006 Show

THE VIRGINIA PENINSULA – Four Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) students have won awards at the Peninsula Fine Arts Genesis 2006 College Juried Exhibition. The award-winning paintings, photography work and drawings were exhibited April 8-30, 2006 at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News. Also featured were the works of other students from Thomas Nelson Community College and several area colleges.

The show’s first place Mayor’s Art Award went to Thomas Nelson’s Fallon Williams for her photography entry “Cello Figure Study.” Another TNCC photography student, Ashley Segovia won the O’Neal’s Studio Award for her work entitled “Belle.” Fallon and Segovia are Newport News residents.

TNCC Student, Soldier Brings War in Iraq to Campus through Photographic Presentation

THE VIRGINIA PENINSULA – Ferdinand Thomas, a Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) science education major and U.S. Army Soldier brings the war in Iraq to the Hampton campus by way of a presentation entitled “A Journalist’s Perspective of Iraq” Wednesday, March 15 at 2:30 p.m. in Diggs Hall, Room 100.

The one-hour presentation is sponsored by the TNCC Photography Club. Thomas will discuss his combat zone experiences and show a photo album of photos he captured on camera while serving in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a junior soldier assigned to the 214th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment in Richmond, Va.
