Thomas Nelson Community College will host its annual Halloween Poetry Reading on Tuesday, October 25 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Historic Triangle campus, 4601 Opportunity Way, Williamsburg. Presented by TNCC’s Creative Writing class and the Student Government Association, the event is open to TNCC students, faculty and staff as well as members of the community.

The free event will feature entertaining readings of original poetry and prose. Participants and attendees are encouraged to wear costumes for the event. This is the fifth year for the Halloween Poetry Reading at the Historic Triangle campus. “It began as a class activity for the creative writing students to participate in. However, from the beginning, the campus community and the public were always invited,” said Assistant Professor of English Diana Martin.

By the time you finish reading this paragraph, you will likely have received at least two other digital communications via Facebook, Twitter, email, text message, voicemail, etc.  Recent studies indicate that Americans spend more time interacting with digital screens and monitors and less time invested in face-to-face communication.  To raise awareness about this phenomenon and to create a greater sense of community, you are invited to join TNCC students, faculty and staff for a special “unplugged” performance to be held Monday, April 25, 2011, from 4:00 – 6:00 PM in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium.

The event will feature poetry readings, a capella and acoustic musical performances unaided by the use of electronic devices.  The event titled, “BE HERE NOW”, has been proposed and planned by TNCC journalism students and faculty concerned with the growing dependence upon digital media for both formal and informal interpersonal communication.
