Sept. 17 Faculty Colloquium at TNCC Explores Peace Corps

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Department of Communications, Humanities  and Social Sciences presents “Welcome to the Far East of Nowhere?” The faculty colloquium will examine the Peace Corps and its operations in Mongolia. Free and open to the public, the 90-minute presentation begins at 2 p.m. on Monday, September 17 in the Espada Conference Center, Moore Hall on the Hampton campus.

TNCC Adjunct Professor of English Christopher LaPointe will describe his experiences as a member of the Peace Corps. He served in Mongolia from June 2007 to August 2009, but stayed in the country an extra year to experience the culture. LaPointe hopes to appeal to those interested in joining the Peace Corps as well as those who are “simply interested in multicultural experiences.”

TNCC Opens Black History Month Observance with Newport News Mayor as Keynote Speaker

HAMPTON, Va. – Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) begins its Black History Month observance on Tuesday, February 1 with an opening ceremony featuring Newport News Mayor the Honorable Dr. McKinley L. Price as keynote speaker. Free and open to the public, this kick-off event takes place from 7-9 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium located in Templin Hall on the Hampton campus.

The program will also include a musical performance by Legacy of Weyanoke and an exhibit of photographs taken in Africa by local photographer Nadere Johnson. Refreshments will be served.

TNCC to Observe World AIDS Day with Awareness Program

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will observe World AIDS Day on Wednesday, December 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Hampton campus with a series of activities and an awareness program titled “Kiss and Tell”  featuring speakers who are HIV positive.  Coordinated by Student Activities and the Student Government Association in conjunction with, the Self-Protection Awareness Program (SPA) , Newport News, AIDS awareness activities will take place in Gators, Griffin Hall. Va. Secretary of Education to Speak About STEM Education at TNCC

Experts say America’s economic growth and national security are heavily dependent upon the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, or STEM. Acknowledging this, Governor McDonnell and the Virginia Department of Education are focusing on initiatives designed to educate citizens in preparation for emerging technologies. On Tuesday, November 9 Virginia Secretary of Education Gerard Robinson will speak about STEM education at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC).

The invitation-only gathering takes place at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center in Hampton at 600 Butler Farm Rd. and begins with breakfast at 7:15 a.m. followed at 7:45 a.m. by the Secretary’s presentation. Robinson will focus on Governor McDonnell’s STEM initiatives and the importance of STEM Education in K-12 and Higher Education. The presentation is also a means to garner support for the seamless integration of STEM subjects throughout the curriculum in every Virginia school — not just magnet or specialty schools or private and public academic institutions.

TNCC Faculty Colloquium to Explore Sci-fi Nov. 4

Science fiction and fantasy enthusiasts throughout Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) and the surrounding community are invited to a Faculty Colloquium titled “Old Ideas for New Worlds: Science Fiction, Fantasy and Archetype.” Free and open to the public, the presentation takes place Thursday, November 4 at 3 p.m. in the Espada Room, Moore Hall on the Hampton campus.

Four aficionados of both science fiction and fantasy from the TNCC English faculty will discuss some of these works, their use of storytelling and archetype. Discussions will also explore a few of the most common central themes in science fiction and fantasy genres. The Colloquium panel includes Jacqueline Blackwell, Alex Chirila, Lisa Ray and Michael Weiser.

TNCC Police Host Free Safety Symposium, Public Invited

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Department of Police and Security invites all students, faculty, staff and the public to a Safety Symposium on Tuesday, October 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium located in Templin Hall, Hampton campus.

The free event provides updates on issues that impact security and safety on campus. Special guests in law enforcement and public safety from throughout the area will be on hand to present information on an array of topics. Please support this great community partnership.
