Over 20 Future Hampton Teachers to Graduate from TNCC as Part of Unique Initiative by School District

Nearly 30 aspiring teachers are graduating from Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) on May 14 as part of a program called First Steps, a creative “grow your own” initiative by Hampton City Schools (HCS) to address a shortage of elementary and special education teachers. The students, all full-time HCS employees, met requirements to earn Associate degrees in social science with specialization in education and transferred to Old Dominion University (ODU) for the program’s next phase.

Launched in summer 2008 by HCS in partnership with TNCC and ODU, First Steps is training 24 HCS employees, and in return, the future teachers must commit to teaching at least three years in Hampton. The diverse group comprised of administrative assistants, teachers’ assistants and a school bus driver completed their TNCC degrees in a series of tailored eight-week sessions totaling four courses each semester, said Dr. Joan Hecht, Lecturer and Director of Cooperative Teacher Education Programs for TNCC/ODU.

UVa Engineering Program Offer is Open to TNCC Students

Patricia Taylor, TNCC’s Dean of Mathematics Engineering and Technologies, has announced an exciting offer from the University of Virginia (UVa) that TNCC Engineering students can explore. UVa is giving students an opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree in engineering without traveling to Charlottesville. Taylor asks all TNCC faculty and staff to share this great news.

UVa is now offering one of its undergraduate degree programs fully at a distance. Graduates of an Associate of Science in Engineering degree program (or equivalent) are potentially eligible for the program. Domestic Violence Awareness Program Oct. 21 in Gators

The College’s M.A.N. Up Project and Student Activities, in association with Reel Vision Film and Video Productions, will present a domestic violence awareness program on Wednesday, October 21 on the Hampton Campus in observance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The 12:00 p.m. program will take place in Gators Cafeteria, Griffin Hall, featuring a panel discussion and a film on the topic entitled “Cycle.”

Panelists for the event include TNCC Police Sergeant Kelvin Maxwell, TNCC Adjunct Professor Veronica McMillan and Jennifer Dziura, Community Relations and Volunteer Coordinator for Transitions Family Violence Center.

Certificate in Fire Science Leadership Added to TNCC Offerings

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) has expanded its offerings this fall to include a Career Studies Certificate in Fire Science Leadership. The new program was created in response to needs expressed by local fire departments and educates students about the latest advances in the field of fire science. TNCC also offers an Associate of Applied Science in Fire Science Technology.

“This is just the beginning of many opportunities our service area can expect from TNCC,” said Norman Hahn, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs. “The College continues to position itself to provide college degrees and certificates to meet the needs of our business partners and the workforce. We continue to Reach. Teach. Serve. as One College. One Vision,” he said.

TNCC Professor Develops Interactive Online Program in Mechanical Engineering Technology with Nearly $3,000 VCCS Grant

Michael Uenking, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering Technology at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC), may have the antidote for students bored with traditional lectures. With a $2,925 Professional Development Grant from the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), Uenking is developing the Statics, Strength of Materials, and Dynamics Online Tutorial (STAMINA), an interactive online program for students in three TNCC Mechanical Engineering Technology classes: Statics, Strength of Materials, and Dynamics.

The online supplement is inundated with course content, video, audio, animation and more, and will feature components of Adobe Captivate 3, Flash and other programs.

Thirty-one U.S. Navy Students to Graduate from TNCC Medical Technology Laboratory Program

On Thursday, Feb. 5, at 9 a.m., 31 U.S. Navy Sailors will graduate from the Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) Program at Thomas Nelson Community College during a ceremony in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Templin Hall. Capt. Susan E. Herron, NC, USN, Commanding Officer of Portsmouth, Virginia-based Naval School of Health Sciences and Alvin J. Schexnider Ph.D., TNCC’s Interim President will address the graduating class.  Force Master Chief Laura A. Martinez, Hospital Corps director, is also scheduled to address the graduating class as guest speaker.

This is the nineteenth and last class to graduate from Thomas Nelson Community College since the U.S. Navy awarded the contract in 1998. The graduating students will receive the TNCC Medical Laboratory Technician Certificate and will be awarded the Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) HM 8506.
