TNCC Student Named Coca-Cola Bronze Scholar

A Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) Nursing student has been selected as a 2010 Coca-Cola Bronze Scholar. Donna Terry was selected based on scores earned in the All-USA Academic Team competition sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and administered by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society.

As a Bronze Scholar, Terry will be listed among gold and silver scholars in a special section of USA Today and she will receive $1,000.

Honor Society at TNCC Launches Lecture Series March 23

The Phi Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will launch a lecture series beginning Tuesday, March 23 based on the topic, Do You Know? The series of three lectures featuring TNCC students and members of the community will be conducted on the Hampton campus. Free and open to the public, the lectures all begin at 6 p.m. in the Espada Room at Moore Hall.

The first in the series – Do You Know What Cancer Is? – will be presented by a representative from the American Cancer Society. The speaker will address questions about cancer prevention, detection and other related topics. The lecture will also include information about the upcoming Relay for Life events to raise money for cancer research.

Thomas Nelson Students Named to All-Virginia Academic Team

Thomas Nelson Community College students Eduardo Davila-Reyes, Ashley Wiggins and Kelli Cutler have been named to the 2008 All-Virginia Academic Team. Selection is based on the nominations submitted by two-year colleges for the All-USA Academic Team, an international competition co-sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society, USA TODAY and the American Association of Community Colleges. Davila-Reyes and Wiggins will be graduating from TNCC on May 13 at the College’s thirty-ninth Annual Commencement Ceremony to take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Hampton Coliseum.

Davila-Reyes has attended TNCC since fall 2006 pursuing an Associate of Science and an Associate of Social Science degree. This fall, he will transfer to the College of William & Mary to pursue a degree in Biology or Neuroscience with a minor in Biochemistry. He aspires to become a pharmacist.

The Thomas Nelson Community College Phi Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the International Honor Society of two-year colleges has won the following awards during the 29th. Annual Virginia Regional Conference held in Richmond February 29 through March 2:

  • 5-Star Chapter
  • 3rd Place Service Hallmark
  • 8th Place Scholarship Hallmark
  • Hall of Honor (Students): Jolene Nemec, Megan Kibitlewski and Ashley Wiggins
  • Horizon Award (Advisors): Pamela Biernacki

PTK International Honor Society at TNCC to Sponsor Honor Seminar Series

Gold, Gods and Glory, the Global Dynamics of Power is this year’s topic for the Honor Seminar Series sponsored by the Thomas Nelson Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society. Seminars will be held in Room 100, Diggs Hall at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7 and Nov. 28.  The seminars are free to TNCC students, faculty and staff.  Admission is $2.00 for the general public with all proceeds to be donated to the VA Civil Rights Memorial Fund. The Virginia Peninsula – The Thomas Nelson Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society will be hosting the presentation of the following pre-recorded lectures:

•    “The Iraq War and Its Consequences in the Middle East”
Thursday, October 26 at 6:00 pm in the Mary Christian Auditorium.
Presenter: Dan Senor, former Chief Spokesperson for the U.S.-led Coalition in Iraq and a Senior Advisor to Presidential Envoy L. Paul Bremer III.
