Thomas Nelson Community College Workforce Development offers Peninsula job seekers the opportunity to find jobs with more than 30 hiring employers at its annual spring job fair on Thursday, April 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center (PWDC) located at 600 Butler Farm Road in Hampton.

In addition, the job fair features workshops on starting a business, writing resumes, interviewing, finding federal jobs and more. Last year, over one thousand people attended this event. (more…)

TNCC Business Seminar Series Offers Skills for the 21st Century Workforce

It is a new economy, and in these changing times employees and businesses must learn to better sell, service and lead. Throughout March, TNCC Workforce Development will offer a series of seminars to help employees and employers gain the skills necessary to adapt to and capitalize on opportunities in today’s business climate.

“These highly recognized courses were developed for the 21st century workforce,” says Michelle Manfred, TNCC Director of Corporate Training. “We give employees and employers the tools they need for today’s challenges,” adds Manfred. Participants will learn to think, collaborate, initiate, continuously improve and create while allowing technology to do the routine.

Upcoming Fall Job Fair at Thomas Nelson Community College Provides Variety of Services

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Virginia’s unemployment rate for July 2008 was 4.4 percent, up from 3.0 percent at the same time last year. Despite what has been and continues to be a steady increase in unemployment over the last year, there are still local employers who need to fill vital positions in their organizations. Forty such employers are expected to participate in Thomas Nelson Community College’s annual Fall Job Fair on Wednesday, October 8th at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center (PWDC), 600 Butler Farm Road, Hampton.

Representatives from two of the Peninsula’s largest employers – Canon Virginia and Northrop Grumman Newport News – will join manufacturing, public service, hospitality, and retail companies at the event, from 10 am to 3 pm. Employers and potential employees will be able to exchange information, complete applications, and even participate in onsite interviews. Jobseekers will also be able to attend career success seminars on writing winning résumés, sharpening interviewing skills and finding federal employment.

Career Pathways Workshop to Promote Collaboration between TNCC and High School Counselors

Thomas Nelson Community College’s Office of Outreach and Recruitment in conjunction with the Virginia Tech Prep Consortium is giving high school counselors the opportunity to earn a professional development certificate through participation in a one-day workshop. The event which is also open to TNCC counselors is set for Thursday, Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center, 600 Butler Farm Road, Hampton.

The workshop is designed to arm counselors with a wealth of information to strengthen their academic and/or career advisement capabilities, according to the College’s Outreach and Recruitment Director Dr. Crystal Taylor. She said the session will enable counselors to offer a wider array of options to their students who seek assistance making post graduation or career plans. Among topics included in the six-hour session are career pathways, associate degree and other programs offered by TNCC, internships and cooperative education opportunities. Also on the day’s agenda are a working lunch and a field trip to Sentara Hospital.
