TNCC Students Among Virginias Top 10 Community College Students

Two Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) students were named among the top 10 community college students in Virginia as ranked by USA Today, The Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society, and the American Association of Community Colleges.

Triszha Espina, the top-ranked student in Virginia’s Community Colleges (VCCS), and Niambi Glover-Redd were honored among their peers from throughout the VCCS on April 20 as members of the First Virginia Team. Another TNCC student, Lisa Taylor, was selected for the Second Virginia Team.

TNCC Selects SunTrust Bank to Receive 2011 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy

Thomas Nelson Community College selected SunTrust Bank for the 2011 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy in acknowledgment of SunTrust’s exceptional contributions to TNCC. The award was presented Tuesday, April19 during a luncheon ceremony at the Country Club of Virginia.

The Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy is hosted by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE) to honor the leading philanthropists from each of Virginia’s 23 community colleges as well as the system’s statewide foundation. This marks the sixth year the awards have been given.

TNCC Biology Professor Awarded VCCS Chancellor’s Faculty Fellowship

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Jennifer Martin, Assistant Professor of Biology has received the 2010-2011 Virginia’s Community Colleges (VCCS) Chancellor’s Faculty Fellowship.

The prestigious award is given annually to no more than three professional educators within the VCCS  “to ensure that capable people within the VCCS have opportunities to prepare themselves for top-level management and instructional positions within the VCCS.”

TNCC Faculty Member Shar Wolff Named Chair of Hampton Arts Commission

Photography Department head and chair of TNCC Cultural Affairs, Shar Wolff has been named chairperson of the Hampton Arts Commission. She will hold the post for four years having previously served two years as a commissioner for the organization.

The Hampton Arts Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the Hampton City Council in the promotion of artistic and cultural programs in the city. The commission also works with the local government to affect means for City support of cultural organizations and programs. As chair of the Hampton Arts Commission, Wolff will conduct business meetings and liaise between regional cultural arts organizations and the Commission, among other responsibilities.

TNCC Names President and Vice-President Award Winners for 2007-08 Graduating Class

Thomas Nelson Community College has named the following graduating students as the recipients of the President and Vice-President Awards for the 2007-2008 graduating class: Valerie Murray Link and Amanda Leigh Collier.

Valerie Murray Link is the recipient of the President’s Award for this year’s graduating class. Link is being recognized for her academic achievements during the pursuit of an Associate of Science degree in Business. She is graduating Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 grade point average (GPA). She is currently employed by Swiss Log as a Quality Manager. This fall, she will continue her education at Old Dominion University where she will pursue a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration/ Information Systems Technology.

The Thomas Nelson Community College Phi Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the International Honor Society of two-year colleges has won the following awards during the 29th. Annual Virginia Regional Conference held in Richmond February 29 through March 2:

  • 5-Star Chapter
  • 3rd Place Service Hallmark
  • 8th Place Scholarship Hallmark
  • Hall of Honor (Students): Jolene Nemec, Megan Kibitlewski and Ashley Wiggins
  • Horizon Award (Advisors): Pamela Biernacki
