Record Numbers of High School Students Benefit from Dual Enrollment Program with Thomas Nelson Community College

Registration for Dual Enrollment Courses Start October 1

THE VIRGINIA PENINSULA – The number of high school students taking advantage of the dual enrollment program offered by Thomas Nelson Community College through the public school systems on the Peninsula has grown by 480% since 2003 – 2004. During the 2005-06 year, 1,490 students or 231 FTEs participated in the program. In 2003-04, the college had 310 students or 66 FTEs participating in the dual enrollment program.

Currently, all the school systems in the service area of Thomas Nelson Community College, including Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, York County, Williamsburg-James City County, and New Horizons Regional Technical Center and Governors School are participating in the dual enrollment program with Thomas Nelson, as are Hampton Christian Schools and Denbigh Baptist Christian School. Dual enrollment courses are available in Administration of Justice, Automotive Technology, Business, Computer Animation, Early Childhood Development, History, Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics, Machine Tool Technology, Marketing, Physics and Science.

Enrollment at an All Time High at Thomas Nelson Community College

The Virginia Peninsula – Enrollment at Thomas Nelson Community College during the 2005-06 academic year reached an all-time high with 13,120 individual students taking classes at the Hampton and Historic Triangle campus. This represents an increase of 6.3% over 2004-2005 academic year. This is the largest enrollment in the College’s history.

Thomas Nelson’s record growth includes a new high at the College’s Historic Triangle Campus where the headcount enrollment grew by % increase over the 2004-05 year.

Thomas Nelson Community College to Graduate Largest Class in College’s History

THE VIRGINIA PENINSULA — Thomas Nelson Community College will be graduating 1,011 students at its commencement ceremony to be held at the Hampton Coliseum today, Wednesday, May 17 at 7:00 p.m. This is the largest graduating class in the College’s history. The 2005-06 class is also receiving the greatest number of awards granted since the College first opened its doors in 1968. There are 1,396 awards eligible to be presented at this ceremony. This includes associate degrees, career certificates and diplomas, and includes students who completed their curriculum requirements in the summer session of 2005, fall semester 2005 or spring semester 2006. Some students will receive more than one degree or a combination of degree, career certificate or diploma.

As part of the commencement exercises, award-winning journalist and host of WHRO’s HearSay, Cathy Lewis will address the graduating class.
