TNCC to Test Emergency Alert System in Hampton and Williamsburg, March 30

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will test an emergency alert system on Saturday, March 30 at campuses in Hampton and Williamsburg. The trial alerts, taking place from 10 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m., will be TNCC’s first live tests of the system and will allow the College to tune emergency alerts for maximum coverage at both locations. Those on and near TNCC campuses can expect to hear several different tones and verbal messages during the tests.

College officials coordinated with emergency managers in Hampton and Williamsburg in scheduling the tests.

TNCC to Participate in Statewide Tornado Drill, March 12

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will test its emergency notification procedures at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12 during a statewide tornado drill. The date is designated as Tornado Preparedness Day in the Commonwealth.

During the drill, all components of the College’s emergency notification process will be tested including campus-wide student, faculty and staff e-mail, TNCC internet homepage alerts and e2Campus. Used by roughly 650 campuses nationwide, e2Campus is a web-based unified emergency notification system that enables the transmission of instant alerts to cell phones, land lines and/or several other communications devices.

Update: TNCC will open on Tuesday, October 30, at 11:00 am for all faculty, staff and students

Update:  The college will open on Tuesday, October 30, at 11:00 a.m. for all faculty, staff and students (except any essential personnel who may have to report earlier).   This decision was based on an assessment of weather and road conditions, the condition of the campus facilities and grounds, and openings for public schools and local colleges and universities.


Due to Hurricane Sandy TNCC will be closed on Monday, October 29th. Both the Hampton and Historic Triangle campuses as well as the Southeast Higher Education Center will be closed for safety reasons.

TNCC to Test Emergency Alert Sirens Oct. 28, Both Campuses

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will test an emergency alert system on Friday, October 28 on its two campuses. The test begins at 9 a.m. on the Historic Triangle campus in Williamsburg lasting for roughly 15 to 20 minutes. At 1 p.m., the test takes place on the Hampton campus lasting approximately one hour.

Those on and near TNCC campuses should expect to hear several different tones and verbal messages during the tests.

TNCC Police Host Safety Awareness Event Aug. 23

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) Campus Police will promote safety awareness during “Blue Light Special” on Tuesday, August 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Griffin Hall lobby on the Hampton campus and on the second floor of the Historic Triangle campus in Williamsburg. This marks the fourth year for the semi-annual event.

Co-sponsored by Student Activities, the event is an opportunity to meet members of the College’s police force and learn useful, lifesaving information. Attendees will receive information about driving safety and alcohol awareness. TNCC police will also provide parking rules and regulations and information about the e2Campus system, a self-service, web-based, mass notification network that allows TNCC to send instant alerts to faculty, staff and students.

Thomas Nelson Names New Campus Police Chief

Thomas Nelson Community College has selected Acting Police Chief Kelvin Maxwell as its new Police Chief effective Monday, July 25. Maxwell assumed his position as Acting Police Chief on July 13, 2010 after serving nearly five years as an administrative sergeant with the College’s Police Department.

The law enforcement veteran has 14 years of experience having been on police forces at Old Dominion University and Hampton University before joining TNCC in 2006. In his previous position with the College, Maxwell served as department training officer, primary statistics specialist and liaison between TNCC and the State Police.
