All TNCC Campuses Closing Dec. 23 for Winter Break

Governor Kaine has approved an additional eight hours of holiday leave for all state employees.  The following revision to the Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) holiday schedule has been approved by President Alvin J. Schexnider and the TNCC administration.

The College will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, December 21 and Tuesday, December 22.

TNCC Expands Computer Arts Offerings at its Historic Triangle Campus

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will introduce an array of new opportunities for Computer Arts students at the Historic Triangle campus in Williamsburg. The spring 2010 semester will include expanded course offerings and partnerships that will enable students to work with artists in the Williamsburg community.

Cece Wheeler, Professor of Art and Computer Arts Department Head at TNCC, hopes to provide community exposure for TNCC’s Computer Arts students through a relationship with the Williamsburg Symphonia which has numerous performances annually and boasts an extensive patron/subscriber list. “They have asked my video students to edit short clips of movies to be played at the Symphonia Movie Night concert in February at the historic Kimball Theatre,” Wheeler said.

Holiday Hours Announced

The College will close at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. All campuses will reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, November 30.

A winter break will be observed beginning next month. The College will be closed Thursday, December 24 through Sunday, January 3. Regular business hours will resume on Monday, January 4, 2010.

Southeast campus provides collegial atmosphere for those seeking higher education.

Eddie McCray has timed the two to three minutes it takes him to get from his Riverlands apartment to classes at Thomas Nelson Community College’s Southeast Higher Education Center.

But the convenient location is only part the allure for McCray, a 23-year-old who works full-time and takes night classes. ”I like this atmosphere — it’s very comforting and motivating,” he said.

Open House at TNCC’s Southeast Higher Education Center to Highlight Program and Course Offerings Available in Fall 08

An Open Registration Night scheduled for Thursday, July 31 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Thomas Nelson Community College’s Southeast Higher Education Center will feature the educational opportunities available to the community this fall. The Center is located at 5720 Marshall Ave. in Newport News. Participants will be able to obtain information about applying for admission, financial aid opportunities and course offerings. Representatives from these departments will be available to answer questions and assist students with registration. Instructors, department deans, and representatives from Student Services will also be in attendance to welcome and assist prospective students.

The Southeast Higher Education Center gives students an opportunity to work toward earning a career certificate in Administrative Assistant Office Manager, Medical Office Assistant, Information Technology, and Microcomputer Applications or starting an associate degree program. This fall, the College is offering 22 courses including English, Math, History, Keyboarding, Sociology and Psychology to name a few.

TNCC’s Southeast Higher Education Center Enrollment Increases Over 100 Percent

Virginia Peninsula – Enrollment at Thomas Nelson Community College’s Newport News-based Southeast Higher Education Center has increased more than 180 percent since it opened last fall. From its 5720 Marshal Ave. location, the Center gives students an opportunity to work toward earning a career certificate or starting an associate degree program.

The College established the Southeast Higher Education Center in association with An Achievable Dream Middle and High School and the Newport News Public School System offering evening and weekend courses to adult learners.
