NASA Langley Official is Keynote Speaker for TNCC’s 43rd Commencement

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will celebrate its 43rd commencement ceremony Wednesday, May 16 at 7 p.m. at the Hampton University Convocation Center. Stephen Jurczyk, Deputy Center Director NASA Langley Research Center, will deliver the keynote address.

Jurczyk has spent most of his 25-year career in aerospace with NASA in various systems engineering, management and senior leadership positions at NASA Headquarters I Washington, D.C., Hampton, Virginia-based Langley Research Center and Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. He contributed to the development of several space-based remote sensing systems supporting Earth Science research including the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, Landsat 7, and the Clouds and Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Observations mission.

Apprentice School Director is Keynote Speaker for TNCCs 42nd Commencement

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will celebrate its 42nd commencement ceremony Saturday, May 14 at 10 a.m. at the Hampton University Convocation Center. Everett Jordan, Director of Education for Newport News Shipbuilding’s Apprentice School, will deliver the keynote address.

Jordan is a 1977 graduate of The Apprentice School and attended TNCC. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Saint Leo University and a Master’s degree in Education from The George Washington University. He currently represents Poquoson as a member of the TNCC Board.

Free Public Forum at TNCC Examines Faith and Science

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Division of Communications, Humanities, and Social Sciences will present a free public forum on TNCC’s Hampton campus titled, “Convergence: A Faith and Science Dialog Between a Muslim Aerospace Engineer and an Ordained Christian Physicist.” The panel discussion takes place Tuesday, March 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Espada Conference Center located in Moore Hall.

Dr. Ahmed Noor of Old Dominion University (ODU) and the Tidewater Islamic Center and Reverend George Murphy, a Lutheran minister and member of the Society of Ordained Scientists, will serve as guest panelists. The forum will “bring together speakers with both disparate and similar backgrounds to discuss issues in science, faith and popular culture,” said Dr. Charles Smith, who teaches Biology and Religious Studies at TNCC. After each speaker’s presentation, the speakers will take questions and comments from the audience.

TNCC Opens Black History Month Observance with Newport News Mayor as Keynote Speaker

HAMPTON, Va. – Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) begins its Black History Month observance on Tuesday, February 1 with an opening ceremony featuring Newport News Mayor the Honorable Dr. McKinley L. Price as keynote speaker. Free and open to the public, this kick-off event takes place from 7-9 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium located in Templin Hall on the Hampton campus.

The program will also include a musical performance by Legacy of Weyanoke and an exhibit of photographs taken in Africa by local photographer Nadere Johnson. Refreshments will be served.

TNCC Announces Speaker for May 15 Commencement

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will celebrate its 41st commencement ceremony Saturday, May 15 at 10:00 a.m. at the Hampton University Convocation Center.

The Commencement speaker is Mrs. Thomasina R. Wright, a Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding executive and TNCC alumna. One of the two highest ranking African American women at Northrop Grumman’s Newport News location, Mrs. Wright is Trade Director of the Aircraft Carriers Program.

Thomas Nelson Community College to Celebrate Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

Thomas Nelson Community College will have its Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance on Tuesday, Jan. 15. A program themed Keeping the Dream Alive, 40 Years after King’s Death is set for 11:00 a.m. at the Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Hampton campus.

Sponsored by the Student Government Association, the Office of Student Activities and the African-American History and Culture Club, the free program is open to the public and will feature reflections on the day’s theme by TNCC students Ann-Marie Lovett and Jolene Nemec; a dance performance by the College’s Gator Velocity Dance Team and songs performed by TNCC student Rotita Dupree and Helen Stallings, a TNCC financial aid advisor. Dr. Charles A. Taylor, TNCC president will present the Second Annual Leadership Award to Tuskegee Airman, Ezra M. Hill, a retired U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant and Hampton, VA resident.
