Youthfulness is what led George Tyler to a career teaching math and it’s a quality he exudes to this day. One of two instructors at Thomas Nelson Community College the entire 40 years it’s been open, Tyler swears he weighs just three pounds more than he did in the tenth grade.

You can bet it’s true. His piercing blue eyes and trim white beard belie his approach to 70 next month. Forty years worth of old textbooks, including a college calculus one his father used in the 1920s, fill an office that tells his story.

TNCC Biology Professor Awarded by VCCS for Teaching Excellence

Thomas Nelson Community College’s Martin D. Zahn, associate professor of Biology has received the 2008 Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence.  Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Chancellor Glenn DuBois presented the award during the State Board Annual meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008 in Richmond, Va.

The prestigious award is given annually to one faculty member in the VCCS “who distinctly represents the teaching excellence found at VCCS colleges.” The VCCS accepted only one nomination per campus for the award. As this year’s honoree, Mr. Zahn received a VCCS stole and $5,000.

TNCC Faculty Members Accepted in Nationally Recognized Program for Mathematics Educators

Two Thomas Nelson Community College faculty members have been accepted into the Mathematical Association of America’s (MAA) Section NExT program. Section NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) is a professional development program for new college and university faculty in the mathematical sciences.

As NExT fellows, Math Instructors Libby Arnesen and Matthew Watts will attend regional meetings over the next year in MAA’s Maryland-District of Columbia-Virginia (MD-DC-VA) section. The program will enable the two educators to explore key aspects of life in academia such as teaching effectively, reform pedagogy, and getting tenure all while building relationships with other participants including senior faculty mentors assigned to them from around the MD-DC-VA region, according to the MAA.

TNCC Educators Receive Chancellor’s Award for Podcasting Initiative that Enhances Learning

A team of Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) faculty and staff received a Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Chancellor’s Technology in Education Award at this year’s New Horizons Conference. Former VCCS Chancellor Arnold Oliver and the VCCS New Horizons Conference Committee established the annual awards program in 2000 to acknowledge excellence in the use, adaptation, and development of technology that enhances teaching, learning, and working environments in the system’s 23 colleges across the state.

The TNCC group won top honors in the creation and/or best use of shared learning content category for its recently launched podcasting initiative. TNCC is first in the VCCS to initiate such technology.

AAWCC at TNCC Promotes Equity and Excellence for Women in Higher Education

The American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC), Hampton Roads Chapter, Thomas Nelson Community College invites the community to a presentation entitled, Breaking through the Glass Ceiling: Leadership and Negotiation Skills with Dr. Cheryl Thompson-Stacy, President, Eastern Shore Community College. The presentation, scheduled for Wednesday, April 30 will be held at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center, 600 Butler Farm Road from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served at 12:30 p.m. There is no fee to attend this presentation. The local AAWCC also invites members of the community-at-large to join the organization. AAWCC is a national organization that champions women and helps them maximize their potential. For more than 30 years the AAWCC has promoted equity and excellence for women in community, junior and technical colleges.

Thomas Nelson Teaches Spanish to Emergency Response Personnel

Thomas Nelson Community College is offering the first of several eight-week courses in Spanish for EMT, EMS and firefighter professionals in the College’s Historic Triangle campus . The course is made possible due to a grant received by Thomas Nelson Community College from the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation.

There are seven participants in the first offering, all firefighters and EMTs from the Williamsburg and James City County fire departments. The next group of students started a similar program tailored to nursing staff on August 27 and they are volunteer workers at the Olde Towne Medical Center. Each week consists of two hours in class and at least two hours’ time outside of the class including online and CD instruction at the student’s convenience during the week for the eight weeks. The course is offered free of charge since the expenses are covered by the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation grant.
