A TNCC Director is Among First Place Technology in Education Award Winners

Thomas Nelson Community College’s Director of Distance Learning Ruth Smith was among several Virginia community college instructional designers who earned the first place Technology in Education (TIE) award for the Teaching Online Program (TOP). The first place winner received $1,500.

The annual award recognizes individuals and groups for technological advances that enhance the educational resources offered by the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). Members of the VCCS faculty and staff judged each entry on creativity, potential longevity, usefulness across multiple disciplines and institutions, impact on student success and relevance to the VCCS mission and Dateline 2009.

TNCC Professor Develops Interactive Online Program in Mechanical Engineering Technology with Nearly $3,000 VCCS Grant

Michael Uenking, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering Technology at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC), may have the antidote for students bored with traditional lectures. With a $2,925 Professional Development Grant from the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), Uenking is developing the Statics, Strength of Materials, and Dynamics Online Tutorial (STAMINA), an interactive online program for students in three TNCC Mechanical Engineering Technology classes: Statics, Strength of Materials, and Dynamics.

The online supplement is inundated with course content, video, audio, animation and more, and will feature components of Adobe Captivate 3, Flash and other programs.

TNCC is the Host Site for First GAITE Exploratory Event

Thomas Nelson Community College will be the site of the first Governor’s Academy for Innovation, Technology and Engineering (GAITE) exploratory event on Saturday, Nov. 15.  Called, Designing the Future, the event is expected to draw roughly 75 middle school students from six school divisions to the Espada Conference Center in Moore Hall on the College’s Hampton campus.

The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with coffee and light refreshments. At 9:00 a.m. participants will engage in fun and interactive activities in topics such as modeling and simulation, smart materials, and Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD). Thomas Nelson faculty members slated to lead the Digital and Rapid Prototyping workshop include Tom Pringle, CADD; Michael Uenking, Mechanical Engineering Technology; and Nina Mun, Engineering.

TNCC Receives Grant for Career Coach in Advanced Manufacturing

Thomas Nelson Community College has received a grant from the Virginia Community College System for a new Career Coach in Advanced Manufacturing.

The Thomas Nelson career coach will work with students in the Greater Peninsula high schools including the New Horizon’s Governor’s Academy for Innovation, Technology, and Engineering (GAITE).   Students will learn about high school and college articulated courses in career pathways for employment with Peninsula companies in advanced manufacturing, engineering, and engineering technologies.

New Procedures for TNCC Wireless Network

TNCC has implemented a new security procedure for accessing the wireless network here at Thomas Nelson. We are continuing to provide a secure work environment and we have implemented a Network Access Control appliance that will ensure that you have permission to access our network.

TNCC Summer Camps to Expose Area Teens to Future Careers in Manufacturing, Industry and Technology

Many local area middle and high school students will be off to camp this summer but not just any ordinary summer camp. Thanks to the Office of Outreach and Recruitment at Thomas Nelson Community College, and the Fabricator and Manufacturing Association (FMA), these campers will be on the fast track to charting their career plans and future professions.

The College’s Office of Outreach and Recruitment is sponsoring two free summer camps for students in grades 7 through 10. The first camp is scheduled for June 25-29 with activities from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Historic Triangle campus, Williamsburg, Virginia. Beginning July 30, the second camp will run daily from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. through August 3 at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center in Hampton. Each camp can accommodate 10 to 25 students, however space is limited, said Dr. Crystal Taylor, Outreach and Recruitment Director.
