TNCC Awarded Over $1 Million Grant for TRiO Program

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) has been awarded a $1,192,480 grant from the U.S. Department of Education for its TRiO Student Support Services. The grant will be spread over five years with TNCC receiving $238,496 the first year which began this September.

Virginia Keithley, the College’s  TRiO director, said the grant will support a week long summer orientation for freshmen called Smart Start to TNCC, expansion of TRiO’s mentor component, implementation of an intense first-year experience for entering freshmen and the hiring of two part-time staff members (retention specialist and supplemental instructor). The retention specialist will work with first-year TRiO students on their study skills, learning style and personality congruency with career/major choice. The supplemental instructor will attend a specialized Mathematics class with TRiO students and meet outside of class two to four hours a week augmenting instruction, she explained.

TRiO Program at TNCC Launches New Initiatives for Student Success and Retention

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) TRiO program aims to increase student success and retention with two new initiatives, Smart Start to TNCC and Academic Boot Camp. Smart Start targets 2010 high school graduates and Academic Boot Camp is designed for students ages 25 and older. All applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for TRiO, a federally-funded program open to students in a transfer curriculum who are first-generation college students and meet low-income requirements.

Additionally, upon taking TNCC’s placement test, students must place into English College Composition I (ENG 111) and Pre-algebra (MATH 03) to qualify. The courses are part of the fall class schedule pre-selected by students when they enroll at TNCC.

TNCC Poised to Reach Highest Fall Enrollment to Date

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) is on track to reach its highest enrollment in the College’s 40-year history. Fall classes began on August 22 and 9,297 students were enrolled as of September 1, a 6.1 percent increase over the same period last fall.

At TNCC’s Historic Triangle campus, enrollment climbed 42.6 percent going from 1,134 last fall to1,617 this year in early September. The College’s enrollment at its Southeast Higher Education Center located in Newport News-based Achievable Dream Middle and High School grew by 92.8 percent, going from 166 students in early September last year to 320 this year during the same period. These figures do not include dual enrollment classes and only reflect a portion of contract credit courses that are yet to begin for fall semester.

TNCC Student Awarded $500 VAEOPP Scholarship

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) student Jasmine Cordial was awarded a $500 scholarship from the Virginia Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (VAEOPP). The organization was founded in 1975 to help students in TRiO, a federally-funded program that provides academic counseling and more for first-generation college students, students with a disability and those who meet low-income requirements.

Cordial, a TRiO student, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the Student Government Association, the International Club and the Student Virginia Education Association. She also served on the 2009 homecoming committee and traveled to Richmond this year with other TNCC students, faculty and staff to meet Commonwealth legislators. “TNCC has become such a huge part of my life and has helped me with so many opportunities,” Cordial said.

TNCC Student Receives $1,000 MEAEOPP Scholarship

It hasn’t been an easy semester for Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) student Orana Paullus. She works hard to juggle school with her husband and 10-year-old daughter. She is expecting a son in July. When the pregnancy started to take a toll on her health, her schoolwork suffered, but one hard day was the key to a winning essay for the $1,000 scholarship from the Mid-America Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (MEAEOPP).
