On Tuesday, December 7 from 7:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., Thomas Nelson Community College Workforce Development will host an Employment Agency Forum for area staffing agencies at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center (PWDC) located at 600 Butler Farm Road, adjacent to the College’s Hampton campus.
The Forum will cover:
- New training and assessments in HVAC, machining and welding
- Challenges to training, recruiting, and placing and retaining clients
- Strategies for success

As layoffs continue to impact the region, Rapid Response teams are working to enhance services they offer businesses and affected employees. On November 15 and 16, Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) Workforce Development, as the lead Rapid Response agency for one-fourth of Virginia, hosted a Multi-Regional Rapid Response Summit at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center (PWDC) which is adjacent to TNCC’s Hampton, Virginia campus.
Rapid Response is the function that uses Workforce Investment Act resources to go to worksites during a layoff or closure to assist affected employees, providing information on unemployment insurance and related benefits and community resources for retraining and employment. (more…)

Thomas Nelson Community College Workforce Development offers many training seminars to help employees and employers gain the skills necessary to adapt to and capitalize on opportunities in today’s business climate.
In November TNCC will offer the following class:
- Leading Change-DDI (Friday, November 19, 9 a.m.- 1 p.m.) Business is changing. Develop the skills to position your workforce to manage, adapt to and accept frequent organizational change. Explore productive and unproductive responses and how to make employees realize the inherent benefits of change. Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Dominion Foundation to explore wind turbine technology and design. TNCC was one of four Virginia colleges to receive funding from the philanthropic arm of Dominion Resources. All grants were awarded to support programs in skilled craft, engineering, environmental and technical studies, business, and student-led conservation programs.
Michael Uenking, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering Technology at TNCC, said the grant will fund “Topics in Energy Technology: Wind Turbine Blade Development and Testing,” a new elective course that will incorporate Mechanical Engineering Technology, Computer-Aided Drafting and Design, and Electrical Engineering Technology, all of which directly relate to current Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiatives. Uenking developed the course with TNCC faculty Deborah Lichniak, Assistant Professor and Program Head of Electronics Technology; Tom Pringle, Instructor and Program Head of Computer-Aided Drafting and Design; and Julie Young, Assistant Professor and Program Head of Mechanical Engineering Technology.

Job opportunities can still be found on the Peninsula with the help of Thomas Nelson Community College Workforce Development (TNCC-WD). On Thursday, October 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the College will host its annual Fall Job Fair at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center (PWDC) located at 600 Butler Farm Road in Hampton.
Franz Albertini, job fair coordinator for TNCC Workforce Development, says that the decline of available jobs is driving more people to attend TNCC job fairs. “In today’s challenging job market people are searching for assistance navigating the job hunting process,” adds Albertini. (more…)
