TNCC gets $1.99M to expand industrial training

Thomas Nelson Community College received a $1.99 million Community-Based Job Training Grant this month from the U.S. Labor Department to expand its pipeline of employees to the manufacturing industry.

This is the Hampton college’s second big national grant in the past five years. It received a $1.95 million President’s High Growth Job Training Initiative grant four years ago to create an employment pipeline in advanced manufacturing.

At a time when manufacturing jobs are leaving the United States in unprecedented numbers, Workforce Development at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) in Hampton, Virginia, has achieved a major milestone with the placement of the 4,000th individual in an advanced manufacturing job in the Hampton Roads region in less than four years.

Working with over 80 businesses, four community colleges, state employment offices, two workforce boards, and local governments, TNCC’s employment pipeline delivers a local solution to the nation’s manufacturing challenge—how to assess, prepare, and refer displaced and underemployed workers from traditional manufacturing to advanced, high growth manufacturing jobs.

Upcoming Fall Job Fair at Thomas Nelson Community College Provides Variety of Services

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Virginia’s unemployment rate for July 2008 was 4.4 percent, up from 3.0 percent at the same time last year. Despite what has been and continues to be a steady increase in unemployment over the last year, there are still local employers who need to fill vital positions in their organizations. Forty such employers are expected to participate in Thomas Nelson Community College’s annual Fall Job Fair on Wednesday, October 8th at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center (PWDC), 600 Butler Farm Road, Hampton.

Representatives from two of the Peninsula’s largest employers – Canon Virginia and Northrop Grumman Newport News – will join manufacturing, public service, hospitality, and retail companies at the event, from 10 am to 3 pm. Employers and potential employees will be able to exchange information, complete applications, and even participate in onsite interviews. Jobseekers will also be able to attend career success seminars on writing winning résumés, sharpening interviewing skills and finding federal employment.

TNCC Hosts Spring Job Fair Featuring 60+ Employers

More than 500 jobs will be available at the Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) Spring Job Fair, Wednesday, April 2, at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center. The event runs from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. with career success workshops that feature such topics as resume writing and interviewing skills beginning at 2 p.m.

More than 60 representatives will be on hand from Alcoa, Busch Gardens, Canon, city governments, Colonial Williamsburg, Northrop Grumman, Walgreen’s, and UPS, among others. Many employers will be actively conducting interviews on site, while others will collect resumes to schedule appointments with qualified candidates. “Bring a resume and dress to impress” is the guide.
