TNCC Enhances its English Curriculum with Custom Composition Courses

Satisfactory reading and writing skills are essential ingredients for success, but English classes can be a drag for some students. Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will spice up ENG 111: College Composition I with custom courses designed to coincide with the following areas of study: Science and Technology, Social Science, Business and Accounting, Liberal Arts, and Pre-Nursing.

TNCC Professor to Discuss Transcendental Movement Writers

Thomas Nelson Community College’s Department of Communications and Humanities presents a faculty colloquium Tuesday, Nov. 4 featuring English Professor Victor Thompson discussing his experiences at a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) workshop in Concord, Massachusetts. The one-hour presentation beginning at 2:30 p.m. is free and open the public in the Espada Conference Room, Hampton campus.

Dr. Thompson was among educators from across the nation selected to participate in NEH Seminars and Institutes for College and University Teachers this summer. His Tuesday discussion at TNCC entitled “Walden Three” will center on such Transcendental Movement rebels and reformers as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller and the Alcotts, among others.

Reminder – Students enter the STUDENT WRITING CONTEST

This competition closes at noon on Thursday, October 23, 2008.

Two categories: SHORT STORY &  POETRY
Eligibility:  contest is open to all currently enrolled TNCC students, both full- and part-time.

Prizes:  1st $100; 2nd $75; 3rd $50; 4th $25; 5th $15.    Guidelines:  Students must submit THREE COPIES of each entry.  Students may enter either or both categories.  Entries should be original and previously unpublished compositions.  Entries should be typed (double-spaced) on 8 and 1/2 by 11 paper.  Students should fill out entry forms (available at main desk of library; outside Student Activities Office, room 224; outside Communications & Humanities Office in Templin Hall, or Office 114 in Building C at the Historic Triangle.  Students’ names should NOT appear on any page of submitted poetry or short story.  Submissions with attached entry forms should be turned in to main desk at the library on Hampton campus or to Office C-114 at the Historic Triangle campus by noon, Thursday, October 23, 2008. Students should retain a copy of each entry because submissions to this contest cannot be returned.
