Thomas Nelson Community College Educators Recognized by National Endowment of the Arts

Thomas Nelson Community College’s Aileen Schweitzer, director of the Learning Resources Center, and Dr. Thomas Lawrence Long, professor of English were honored by Dana Gioia, chairman of the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA), with a certificate of achievement for their “outstanding contribution to education” in recognition of their involvement last year in the joint Newport News Public Library and NEA community reading project, The Big Read which involved TNCC’s library and Book Circles among other community book groups to read Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God. The two honorees have since joined the Virginia Peninsula Literary Consortium, which promotes books and authors, having brought Amy Tan to the region last September. The Consortium plans to bring Walter Mosley in October.

Schweitzer is a resident of Newport News and Long is a resident of Norfolk.
