The Virginia Peninsula – Thomas Nelson Community College Men’s Basketball team captured this year’s Virginia Community College System’s State Basketball Championship on Sunday, March 12, 2006 by defeating Southside Virginia Community College –Daniels Campus with a score of 97-80. The men squashed Patrick Henry Community College in their opener 94-75 to move into the semi-finals against Virginia Western Community College, defeating them by 25 points with a score of 92-67 to advance to the championship game on Sunday. TNCC finished its season with a 17-4 VCCS record and a 20-4 overall record. The TNCC team’s success is a repeat of last year 2005 Championship and the college’s 9th State Championship.
The Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors as well as All-Tournament award went to guard James Webb, who scored 8, 32, 27 points in each game. A major contributor to the victories was team captain and a member of last year’s championship team, Deon Tynes who was selected to the Men’s All-Tournament team. He scored 23, 12, and 19 points. Also, first year players Leroy Foster and Johnny Thompkins make their presence known by scoring in double figures each game. Other returnees from last year’s team making significant contributions were Co-Captian, Lenaire Love, Eric Whittle, Sterling Sanders and Muhammad Salaam.
Coaching this year’s team was Head Coach Armand Brown, Assistants, Terry Truesdale, Spence Askew, all former TNCC basketball players and Senior Coach/Advisor Angela Jackson for the team.
The State Tournament was held in Danville, Virginia with Danville Community College as the hosting team.
