Thomas Nelson Community College has selected Acting Police Chief Kelvin Maxwell as its new Police Chief effective Monday, July 25. Maxwell assumed his position as Acting Police Chief on July 13, 2010 after serving nearly five years as an administrative sergeant with the College’s Police Department.
The law enforcement veteran has 14 years of experience having been on police forces at Old Dominion University and Hampton University before joining TNCC in 2006. In his previous position with the College, Maxwell served as department training officer, primary statistics specialist and liaison between TNCC and the State Police.
As an essential member of the College’s Emergency Management Team, Maxwell said his focus will remain on maintaining public safety on our campuses to support a positive teaching and learning environment. He is pursuing a degree in Administration of Justice at TNCC and has numerous certifications from various law enforcement agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Incident Command Structure. He completed Crisis Intervention Training with the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board and currently serves as Sergeant-at-Arms with the National Association of Black Law Enforcement Officers.
The Hampton resident and his wife, Stephanie of 18 years, have two children, Marcus and Syniah.
