Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) experienced its highest enrollment to date in 2008-2009 at 15,512 students. That figure is an 11.3 percent increase over 2007-2008 putting TNCC in the top three among Virginia Community College System’s 23 institutions in terms of growth by percentage.Of the total enrollment for 2008-2009, TNCC served 9,353 students in spring semester 2009 – a 10.4 percent increase over last spring.
While TNCC officials agree that the economy has had a significant role in enrollment trends, they also credit strategic measures taken across the College. Some initiatives include but are not limited to: extended student advising and registration hours; ongoing efforts by recruiters and career coaches in area high schools and increased availability of online registration. Thomas Nelson officials also include among strategic measures Workforce Development efforts that continually create more opportunities for students to receive training and/or career advancement skills. Expanded partnerships with area businesses and industries enable the College to provide these opportunities.
Other measures include expanded course offerings for both online and on campus learners and establishment of the Southeast Higher Education Center at An Achievable Dream Middle and High School in Newport News.
The College will continue efforts to increase enrollment at its new Historic Triangle campus located at 4601 Opportunity Way in Williamsburg adjacent to Warhill High School. The Historic Triangle campus’ three-story 120,000 square-foot facility opens in July to serve greater numbers of citizens in that region.
