TNCC Hosts Free Cyber Security Workshop for Small and Large Businesses in Williamsburg

Published: February 10, 2012

Cyber-attacks are on the rise. To support local businesses and government officials as they develop strategies to counter threats, Thomas Nelson Community College Workforce Development (TNCC-WD) will host a free Cyber Security Workshop on Thursday, February 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Held at the Discovery Center for Economic and Workforce Development, located at 5308 Discovery Park Boulevard, Suite 102 in Williamsburg, the workshop is open to all business and government professionals.

This workshop is part of TNCC-WD’s plans to expand its cyber security programs to collaborate with Internet security firms and train new cyber security professionals to meet new National Security Administration standards. “By promoting education and research in cyber security, we are addressing two key issues facing our region today: the lack of people trained in this field, and the fact that local businesses and municipalities may not have sufficient knowledge to meet the increasing challenges they face in this area,“ says William “Bud” Barnett, Director of Professional and Continuing Education of TNCC’s Workforce Development.

The workshop aims to reduce the vulnerability of cyber-attacks in Hampton Roads by bringing together industry, municipal and state officials to review current cyber threats with threat analysis, operations and enforcement experts and discuss cutting-edge tools and techniques to prevent attacks. Dr. Albert U. Mitchum, Jr., Political Advisor to the Commander of Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base is the keynote speaker. In addition, the workshop will feature:

  • Regional cyber security initiatives
  • Panel discussion with regional experts presenting best practices
  • Open forum providing participants with the opportunity to present cyber needs and challenges to government officials

The event is funded by a grant from Virginia’s Community Colleges (VCCS) and is co-sponsored by the Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance. The VCCS grant provided the support necessary for TNCC to expand its cyber security program, including the addition of a vigorous week-long Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) Boot Camp that will run from Monday, March 12 through Friday, March 16 at an introductory fee of only $1000. Full price at other Virginia location ranges from $1500 – $2995.

People interested in attending the Cyber Security Workshop or the CISSP Boot Camp may register online at For additional information, they may call 757-258-6591.
