TNCC Student Awarded $500 Scholarship by AAWCC

Published: April 22, 2011

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) student Jodi Renner was awarded a $500 scholarship from the American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC). She is the organization’s Region III winner and one of its six scholarship recipients across the nation. AAWCC was created in 1973 to champion women and maximize their potential. Its Region III includes Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Delaware and Washington, D.C.

A pre-nursing student Renner, enrolled at TNCC last fall and strives to transfer to the College of William & Mary. She aspires to become a pediatric cardiac nurse having been inspired by the nurses she encountered during her son’s ordeal as a heart patient. The Missouri native and Williamsburg resident was “extremely” surprised and humbled upon learning she’d been awarded. “I cried at the news. I have never won a scholarship, so I’m completely honored. I want to express my profound thanks to the AAWCC and also to Thomas Nelson Community College for helping facilitate my goals,” said Renner.

A support system comprised of her husband, four children (ages 22, 20, 12 and 10), parents, friends and co-workers allows Renner to effectively manage time between attending classes, tending to household responsibilities and working two jobs. She is a hairstylist at a Williamsburg salon and works part-time at the Discovery Center for Economic and Workforce Development, also in Williamsburg.

Renner is also fueled by the saying, “Why not?” “I’m an older student and I’d been out of school for 20 years before coming to college. Being a hair dresser for 20 years, I have never gotten a college degree. So, I adopted the saying, ‘Why not’ and decided to do something because it’s never too late,” she said.
