TNCC Takes Part in Statewide Tornado Drill March 20, 9:45 a.m.

Published: March 20, 2012

Thomas Nelson Community College will test its emergency notification procedures on Tuesday, March 20 during a statewide tornado drill at 9:45 a.m. The date is designated as Tornado Preparedness Day in the Commonwealth.

During the drill, all components of the College’s emergency notification process will be tested including campus-wide student, faculty and staff e-mail, TNCC internet homepage alerts and e2Campus. Used by roughly 650 campuses nationwide, e2Campus is a web-based unified emergency notification system that enables the transmission of instant alerts to cell phones, land lines and/or several other communications devices.

Kelvin Maxwell, TNCC’s Police Chief, notes that the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) advises that becoming familiar with Tornado Basics is critical to surviving such conditions. A tornado watch means that conditions are favorable for a tornado and that tornadoes are possible. A tornado warning means that a tornado has been sighted or has been indicated by National Weather Service Doppler radar as headed to a particular site.
