Published: July 9, 2010
Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will hold its 2nd Annual Car Show on Saturday, July 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Hampton campus. Open to the public, this fund-raising event is sponsored by TNCC’s Educational Foundation, SunTrust Bank, Old Point National Bank, Dominion, The Original California Car Duster, Express Car Wash, Meguiar’s, Summit Racing, Envision the Moment and Martin Screen Prints & Embroidery. Proceeds will benefit TNCC’s Automotive Technology Training Program.
The event will showcase 30 classes of cars and motorcycles, including Chevrolet, Chrysler and Ford classic and antique cars and trucks, tuners and late model muscle cars. First- and second-place trophies will be awarded in each class. Attendees viewing the motor vehicle array can also enjoy food, soft drinks and music on site. Plus, vendors with various goods will be on hand.
TNCC’s Automotive Technology Training Program provides entry-level instruction for aspiring mechanics and serves the continuing education needs of trained mechanics. With day, evening and weekend courses, the flexible schedule allows students to work in the field while honing their skills.
Proceeds from the car show will purchase training materials and other resources for the Automotive Program. The College strives to update the fleet of cars about every five years to give students the advantage of working on the most up-to-date cars.
Students also have the privilege of working on makes and models they are likely to see once they are hired as mechanics.
The program serves about 70 students per term. Several career studies certificates are available, including Brakes/Steering/Suspension Specialist, Climate Control Specialist, Engine Performance Specialist and Transmission Repair Specialist. Each certificate can be used toward the Automotive Technology Certificate and Associate in Applied Science degree in Automotive Technology.
Approved as a certified automotive training program by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, (ASE), TNCC’s program serves students with instructors who are ASE Master Certified Technicians. All textbooks are also ASE approved. TNCC holds partnered with local dealerships to provide Co-ops for the students that include tuition assistance and assistance with job placement. The program also offers dual enrollment opportunities for high school students who attend New Horizons Regional Education Center in Hampton and Williamsburg/James City County Schools.
