HAMPTON, Va. — Thomas Nelson Community College’s Veterans Affairs Coordinator Tim Freeman was elected Vice President of the National Association of Veterans Program Administrators (NAVPA). The Executive Board appointment adds to Freeman’s record of leadership within the organization. The 2009 NAVPA President’s Award recipient has held several NAVPA posts in recent years including Legislative Committee member, Department of Defense Liaison Co-chair, Education Committee Chair and 2008-2009 Region II Representative.
As Vice President, the U.S. Army veteran will oversee all NAVPA committees and support the organization’s president, as needed. This will included representing NAVPA in its president’s absence. Freeman travels to North Carolina in March to represent NAVPA at the North Carolina/South Carolina Veterans Affairs Association meeting. Additionally, Freeman will be among his NAVPA peers in Washington, D.C. meeting throughout the year with federal lawmakers to discuss issues that affect veterans.
Founded in 1975, NAVPA is an organization of program administrators who are employed by colleges, universities, trade schools and apprenticeship programs across the nation to ensure that student veterans receive the best service and most accurate access to GI Bill benefits. The organization also addresses areas of interest and opportunity for veterans besides education and focuses on professional development for members.
A Chesapeake resident with a higher education career spanning over 20 years, Freeman joined the TNCC staff in 2006. His honors, recognition and affiliations include service as President of the Virginia Association of Financial Aid Administrators; Southern Association of Financial Aid Administrators membership; certification by the Virginia Department of Veterans Services; and service as President of TNCC’s Classified Support Staff Association 2009-2010.
Thomas Nelson Community College’s Veterans Affairs Office provides specialized customer services to assist students in establishing eligibility for receipt of Veterans Administration (VA) education benefits. The office’s main function is to certify and report enrollment information to the VA to facilitate the receipt of benefits by eligible students.
