Published: February 8, 2006

The Virginia Peninsula – On Thursday, February 9, at 8:30 a.m., thirty-two U.S. Navy students will graduate from the Medical Technology Laboratory Program at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC). The ceremony will take place at the Dr. Mary T . Christian Auditorium on the Hampton campus. CAPT Tom McGue, USN, Deputy Commander of the Naval Medical Education and Training Command in Bethesda, MD, will be addressing the graduating class. This is the thirteenth class to graduate from TNCC since the U.S. Navy first awarded the contract to TNCC in 1999.

The graduating students will receive the TNCC Medical Laboratory Technician Certificate and will be awarded the Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) HM 8506. In addition, fourteen students will be receiving their Associate in Applied Science degrees in Medical Laboratory. This is the largest number of students in a MLT graduating class to complete the requirements for their associate degrees. The average registry exam pass rate for the last three MLT graduating classes is 86%, the highest in the nation.

The MLT Certificate calls for an accelerated 60-credit hour program to be completed in 54 weeks. Students complete seven months of their training at TNCC and five months of clinical med lab internship at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. Graduating students apply the training received at U.S. military facilities around the world. Four hundred and seventy-five students have graduated from the program.
