The Virginia Peninsula – Robert F. Shuford, Sr., interim president of the Thomas Nelson Community College Educational Foundation, Inc., received the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. He was among 23 VCCS honorees who received the prestigious first-time award.
VCCS Chancellor Dr. Glenn DuBois presented the awards March 31 during the 3rd Annual Foundation Leadership Conference in Charlottesville. The Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy is a new program designed to recognize the vital role of community college benefactors whose support helps VCCS institutions make a difference in students’ lives.
Dr. DuBois said the recipients demonstrate a passion for the mission of community colleges to ensure that deserving people receive the advantage of a college education. “It is a privilege to be able to recognize these 23 individuals. Through their acts of generosity, they inspire others to follow the example they set,” the Chancellor added.
Shuford is chairman, president and CEO of the Old Point Financial Corporation. His tenure with the Thomas Nelson Educational Foundation Board of Directors dates back to the late 1970s. As interim president of the Foundation Board and an active citizen of the Virginia Peninsula, he is committed to making a difference in the community through his involvement with various service clubs, civic associations, corporate boards and community foundations.
Among the civic and/or service organizations with which he participates are: Greater Peninsula NOW; Hampton Education Foundation; Hampton History Museum (campaign co-chairman); Hampton Roads Academy (co-chairman Capital Campaign); Hampton Roads Partnership; Hampton Roads Public Transportation Alliance (Advisory Board); Hampton Rotary Club; Phoebus Civic Association; Peninsula United Way and the Salvation Army, to name a few.He holds a degree in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He is married to Frances Ann Holtzclaw and has two children, Robert Shuford, Jr. and Anne Shuford Haggett.
The Thomas Nelson Community College Educational Foundation, Inc. is a private, non-profit tax-exempt organization dedicated to advancing and financially supporting educational excellence at Thomas Nelson Community College.
