Veteran Educator, Administrator Brings Vast Experience to TNCC

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) welcomes Alvin J. Schexnider, Ph.D., as interim president. The College’s current President Dr. Charles Taylor began a nine-month sabbatical on October 1  to assume a leadership role on a student access and student success research project critical to the next Virginia Community College System strategic plan.

Joining TNCC on October 1, Dr. Schexnider brings vast higher education experience to the College. His career as an administrator includes both interim and acting president positions at Norfolk State University as well as chancellorship at Winston-Salem State University. The veteran educator has also held faculty and administrative positions at Southern University, Syracuse University, The Federal Executive Institute, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Virginia Commonwealth University and Wake Forest University.

Dr. Schexnider,   a native of Lake Charles, Louisiana, has a B.A. degree in Political Science from Grambling State University and received a M.A. degree and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Northwestern University. While at Northwestern University, he held Norman Wait Harris, Ford Foundation and Woodrow Wilson fellowships.

In 1996 Dr. Schexnider was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration.  Among his numerous honors and awards are the J. Sargeant Reynolds Award for Outstanding Service in Public Administration, Grambling State University Distinguished Alumni Award, and Alpha Phi Alpha Distinguished Educator of the Year Award.

Having written extensively on urban politics and civil military relations, Dr. Schexnider coauthored Blacks and the Military (Brookings Institution) and has served on the editorial boards of Public Administration Review and the Journal of Power and Ethics.

His civic and community affiliations include service on the Board of Governors of the Town Point Club, the Executive Committee of the Greater Norfolk Corporation, and the Board of Small Beginnings of South Hampton Roads.  He also held trustee posts with Marketwatch Funds (1992-1998) and with Wachovia Funds and Municipal Funds (1998-2002).

A longtime public servant to the Commonwealth of Virginia, Dr. Schexnider has had many gubernatorial appointments including the Commission of Virginia’s Future, Board of Visitors of Virginia State University, Commission on Local Government, Virginia Board of Education and Commission on the Revitalization of Virginia’s Cities.  He formerly held memberships on the Executive Committee of Richmond Renaissance, Inc. and the Southern Regional Council of the College Board serving as chair.
