The Basic Rider Course (BRC) approved by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) gives the novice motorcyclist the skills required to ride safely on the street. The 17.5-hour course (6.5 hrs of classroom and 11 hrs of range practice) includes basics of motorcycle operation, effective braking, turning skills, obstacle avoidance, and safe riding strategies.
DOT-approved helmets and 125cc to 500cc motorcycles are provided. Students must provide: full-fingered leather gloves, sturdy over-the-ankle leather shoes or boots, long sturdy pants, long sleeve shirt or jacket and rain gear (if needed). Successful completion of the course gives the participant a 30-day provisionary motorcycle classification. Successful participants may also qualify for up to 10% motorcycle insurance discount.
To be eligible to enroll, a student must know how to ride a bicycle and have a valid driver’s license or learner’s permit. A motorcycle license or motorcycle learner’s permit is NOT required. Because this course is physically demanding, students should be in good health. The instructor will make the final determination if the student will be allowed to participate in the course. All course requirements must be met for successful completion.

Complete the registration card which can be found by clicking on the link above. If you have not attended a community college in Virginia and/or you do not have a username and password you must first apply at http://tncc.edu, and select the STUDENT headline. Next you will select become a student, then you select Apply Now @ TNCC, and click New User.
The motorcycle class is a Non Credit course and it is held at the Hampton campus of TNCC. Please be sure to write down your SIS (student ID) number as well as your username.
Registrations for motorcycle rider classes are accepted in person, by phone, email, or fax. Payment in full is required at the time of registration. Accepted forms of payment are American Express, MasterCard, VISA, check and money order (payable to TNCC). Cash payments CANNOT be accepted.

Summer hours (May -August): Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Friday, 8a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Refunds: Participants may withdraw in person or by phone (by the close of business on Tuesday before class begins) and receive a refund. No refunds can be made after this time period. All refunds are issued via check through the state treasurer’s office and generally take four to eight weeks. Please note that all refunds are automatically issued to the class registrant even if the tuition was paid by another individual, employer or organization.
Cancellation of Classes: The College reserves the right to cancel a class for appropriate reasons. When a class is canceled by the college, registered participants will be notified and given the option of attending another section of the same class (if available) or a full refund.

COST: $100.00 course + $35.00 registration = $135.00 total payable to TNCC.
INSTRUCTORS: Instructors for the Thomas Nelson Workforce Development program are all experienced motorcycle operators who are nationally certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and are re-certified annually.
Note: We schedule four classes per weekend. Only two classes are scheduled per weekend in November & December.
March-October: The three day class meets on Friday 6 -9 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (with one-hour lunch), and Sunday 7 a.m.–1 p.m.
The two day class meets on Saturday 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m. (with one-hour lunch), and Sunday 9 a.m.-7 p.m. (with one hour lunch).
November-December: The three day class meets on Friday 7-10 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m. (with one-hour lunch), and Sunday 9 a.m.-4 p.m. (with one-hour lunch)
