College Part of Summer Drone Exhibit at Nauticus

Some partnerships come about because of a sign from a higher power; others because of a figurative sign. Thomas Nelson Community College, which is becoming Virginia Peninsula Community College, is part of a traveling exhibit on drones this summer at Nauticus, a maritime discovery center in Norfolk, because of a sign in the literal sense.

"Nauticus approached us in April after seeing our ad for drone classes on the tower sign," Doris Shadouh, the College's interim director of Marketing, Communications and Public Relations, said, referencing the digital sign visible from Interstate 64. "They asked us to be a presenting sponsor since we have the only drone program in the region."

Professor Julie Young, who teaches several drone classes, thought it was a wonderful opportunity.

"It's just a really great way to get the word out that Thomas Nelson has a drone program, because not everyone knows it," she said.

The exhibit is called "Drones: Is the Sky the Limit?" It will open June 18 and run through Oct. 9, and is included in the general admission fee to Nauticus. The exhibit will look at commercial drones, how drones are used in everyday life, and how they are used in the military. It covers the history of drones from the first unmanned machines to today's advanced systems. Included will be a bird's-eye view of the aeronautics, engineering and science behind them.

"This is a nationwide thing," Young said. "It's a really high-tech interactive exhibit."

Young is giving a demonstration at a special reception June 16, two days before the official opening. She and some of her colleagues also will be on hand June 18 for more demonstrations and to answer questions. She said there's also an interactive flight room, which will feature an obstacle course.

She noted Nauticus will have different activities with the exhibit throughout the summer. In July, there will be a drone workshop where families can build a drone. Another outreach, scheduled for Aug. 27, is geared toward going back to school. The College will be on hand for those events also.
