October Factoids:
Oct. 13: United States Navy birthday. An Oct. 13, 1775, resolution by the Continental Congress established what is now the United States Navy with "a swift sailing vessel, to carry ten carriage guns, and a proportionable number of swivels, with eighty men, be fitted, with all possible dispatch, for a cruise of three months …" After the American War of Independence, the U.S. Constitution empowered the new Congress "to provide and maintain a navy." Acting on this authority, Congress established the Department of the Navy on April 30, 1798. (Naval History and Heritage Command: https://www.history.navy.mil)
Note: Be sure to drop by Wythe Hall, Room 253 on Oct. 24 for a slice of cake celebrating the U.S. Navy's birthday.
Oct. 26: National Day of the Deployed. This honors the United States military personnel deployed around the globe. The designation recognizes all the brave military personnel who have been deployed, are sacrificing, or have sacrificed their lives to defend our country.
