As part of Veterans Day activities, students and College personnel representing Military & Veterans Services, Financial Aid, and the Student Veterans of America Club (SVA) volunteered at the Peninsula Foodbank in Hampton on Nov. 7 and set a record.
Filling 750 backpacks to support elementary school children on weekends, the team broke a long-standing record at the Peninsula Foodbank. A Navy team of 12 volunteers set the old record (700 bags). The VPCC team created enough backpacks to fulfill the foodbank's quota for Hampton, Newport News and Yorktown.
Participants were Assistant Director of Military & Veteran Service Brandie Weaver, Military & Veteran Services Advisor Kathy Carbaugh, VERITAS Liaison David Lannon, Financial Aid Director Marc Vernon, SVA President Lew Silverman, and SVA Secretary Robert Philman. Volunteers were joined by a member of the community, Kimberly P.
During the Nov. 7 effort, VPCC volunteers also filled three-pound bags from an 800-pound bag of onions creating more than 266 bags of onions. The group plans to revisit the foodbank in the spring 2023 semester to continue this vital community outreach.
