March 11, 2020 - I hope you are enjoying your spring break. We wanted to take a moment of your time to provide you with a brief update regarding COVID-19, and Thomas Nelson’s preparedness and mitigation efforts. Thomas Nelson officials are in daily contact with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) at the local, regional and state levels. We are also receiving weekly situation reports from VDH, as well as daily situation reports from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. As you are aware, there are persons with COVID-19 in Virginia, as well as in the Hampton Roads region. At Thomas Nelson Community College, the health, safety and wellbeing of our Thomas Nelson community is our highest priority. Additionally, our mission to provide the highest quality education possible is important and that is the reason you selected Thomas Nelson. Our goal is to balance these two critical requirements with your best interest in mind. While you are enjoying your spring break, we have used this time when our campuses and sites are nearly “empty” to deep clean and sanitize nearly everything on campus, with focused attention to those areas that we consider high traffic touch points (doors and door knobs, furniture, sink fixtures, etc.) We are also taking steps to help each of us mitigate our risks by providing additional hand sanitizer around campus.
While we are taking a number of preparedness steps and mitigation actions across the College, we all play a role in this effort. If you are more comfortable bringing your personal hand sanitizer and/or disinfecting wipes to clean your “personal space” desk, hands, etc., please do. The best precaution that any of us can take is thorough and frequent hand washing, covering your cough and most of all, staying home if you feel ill. You can monitor the VDH and Centers for Disease Control guidance that is updated daily. Also, please continue to review the information provided by Thomas Nelson and be an active part in helping to prepare for and mitigate the potential impacts of this virus. Additional information is also posted to the Thomas Nelson Emergency Preparedness webpage! We will provide additional information as we near the weekend related to returning to campus from spring break.
