General Assembly Recognized College’s 50th Anniversary with Resolutions

February 9, 2018

The Virginia Assembly last week acknowledged Thomas Nelson Community College’s 50th anniversary with the presentation of resolutions in the Senate and House of Representatives.

With Thomas Nelson President John Dever in attendance for the Feb. 8 proceedings, Sen. Thomas Norment presented the senate’s resolution. Delegates Jeion Ward and Marcia Price offered the house’s resolution as the College’s Learning Resources Director Richard Hodges was on hand representing the College.

Thomas Nelson’s 50th anniversary celebration began with the Launch to 50 event at the Hampton campus last August. Students, College personnel, Thomas Nelson retirees and special guests gathered at the Wythe Hall Gallery to kick off the 18-month celebration.

The festivities included performances by the Fife and Drums of Yorktown; presentation of a 50th anniversary proclamation by the City of Hampton; acknowledgement of the occasion by Governor Thomas Nelson courtesy of Yorktown’s Living History Associates, Ltd.; countdown to 50 and an archival exhibition featuring historic photographs.

The celebration continued with a dinner theater affair at the Hampton campus last November with guests enjoying fine cuisine and Performing Arts production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” at Templin Hall’s Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium.

The slate of 2017 activities concluded with a Cornerstone Ceremony in December.

The momentous 50th anniversary celebration continues this year. Plans are in motion for an anniversary gala in October. Details will be announced soon.
