For 53-year-old Teresa Bishop, attending Thomas Nelson Community College meant fulfilling a “lifelong dream.”
Bishop said she always enjoyed school but hadn’t had the opportunity to continue her education because she was focused on raising her family.
She was married shortly after finishing high school in Marin County, Calif., and her husband was in the Army, so they moved several times before settling in Newport News in 1996 when he was stationed at Fort Eustis.
She watched her husband and two daughters finish their degrees before deciding in fall 2016 that it was her turn.
Bishop joins about 360 graduates Thursday night at TNCC’s 50thcommencement ceremony at Hampton Coliseum.
There are about 1,204 eligible graduates and TNCC is distributing about 1,569 awards for 2018-19, according to school spokeswoman Naima Ford. The general education certificate and pre-nursing career studies certificate programs have the most graduates this year.
