Mitchell Schwartz of York County has been named to the Thomas Nelson Community College Board. He is replacing Dr. Perry L. Showalter.

Schwartz was born and raised just outside Indianapolis and attended community college before joining the military. He served 26 years in the United States Air Force as a Command and Control Operations Specialist, spending time in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Middle East.

Upon retiring from active duty, Schwartz, his wife and son moved to Hampton Roads. He now is a Strategic Operations Manager for the Air Force, coordinating operational planning and the deployment of air combat forces for expeditionary operations, contingencies, humanitarian and natural disaster relief efforts worldwide.

He has a Bachelor’s of Science in National Security, and a master’s in Public Administration, both from Bellevue University (Nebraska). He also earned a graduate certificate in Project Management from George Washington University’s School of Business.

Among the numerous organizations he has volunteered for are Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, Air Force Aid Society, One City Marathon (Newport News) and the Humane Society.

The mission of the Thomas Nelson Community College Board is to serve as a liaison for the college president, community, and the Virginia State Board for Community Colleges; and to perform the duties and responsibilities assigned by the Virginia State Board for Community Colleges.
