The Phlebotomist or Phlebotomy Technician is a vital member of the clinical laboratory team, whose main function is to obtain patient's blood specimens by venipuncture and micro-collection to produce quality results. This program is designed to familiarize the student, through didactic and clinical instruction, skillful and safe training in venipuncture. Didactic lectures cover the theory, anatomy and terminology pertaining to the cardio-vascular system. Practical instruction provides hands-on training in venipuncture technique verified through a skills check-off system which includes performing live blood draws and working with a training arm.-collection to produce quality results.

Upon successful completion of this 80 hour/10-week course training and venipuncture log, the student will receive a course certificate of completion from Virginia Peninsula and be prepared to take the NHA-National Healthcareer Association, Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam.  Upon successful completion of externship, the student can receive a Professional Certificate for the Phlebotomy Technician program, must apply in office.  

Participants must be at least 18 years old and have earned a high school diploma or its equivalent. Must attend a mandatory info session.  Expect to purchase white scrubs to wear for the course.  Closed toe tennis shoes with hard leather top at the toes for your safety are required due to needles practical in course.  Expect externship prerequisites such as background checks, updated immunization & TB test, and or physical exam. Required textbook, NHA-CPT exam study guide, and one NHA-CPT exam voucher are included.
