Discover the next big thing. Considering the tremendous emphasis on scientific discoveries and technological developments in today’s society, there is a great demand for scientists and scientifically-oriented people in business, government, industry and academia.

The Associate of Science in Science at Virginia Peninsula Community College is designed for individuals interested in gaining knowledge and skills to be successful in an entry-level technical science field or to transfer to a four-year institution to complete a bachelor’s degree in a science-related field. The main focus is on training students to think scientifically and preparing them to conduct independent research at the bachelor’s degree level. During this two-year program, full-time students are required to complete two 2-semester science laboratory courses as well as additional courses of their choice to explore further optional science, mathematics or computer science courses. The program culminates with a required independent, guided research course, which allows students to work one-on-one with professors and design a research project on the topic of their choice.

Computer Science

Virginia Peninsula’s Computer Science program offers foundational courses to prepare students for transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in the field. At Virginia Peninsula, students will study the principles of designing and coding software, algorithms, and data structures and will dive into the intricacies of computer architecture. Computers impact almost every aspect of our lives. Computer Scientists are the people who design and develop the computer systems used in manufacturing, business, and science. This two-year associate degree will prepare the student for a future where there are many possible career paths and a ready job market with good salaries. Note: This program can be completed online.

Students may qualify for one of several internship opportunities offered by The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences (VIMS), the Department of Energy (DOE) or other private or government agencies.
