Thomas Nelson shall not tolerate sexual misconduct in any form. Sexual misconduct is a flagrant violation of the values and behavioral expectations for a college community, and all reported violations shall be investigated. An educational institution is a community of trust whose very existence depends on the recognition of everyone’s importance and value. This trust creates the freedom for everyone to live, think, act, and speak without fear of physical harm. Sexual misconduct shatters the bond of trust within a college community.
Thomas Nelson is committed to providing an environment that is free from harassment and discrimination based on any status protected by law. This Policy supplements the following general policy statement set forth by the Virginia Community College System:
This institution promotes and maintains educational opportunities without regard to race, color, sex, ethnicity, religion, gender, age (except when age is a bona fide occupational qualification), disability, national origin, or other non-merit factors. This Policy also addresses the requirements under the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013 (also known as the Campus SaVE Act).
Title IX, a law passed in 1972, prohibits sex discrimination and requires gender equity in educational programs that receive federal funding. Title IX states as follows:
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
Thomas Nelson Community College’s Title IX policy is not intended to substitute or supersede related criminal or civil law. Individuals should report incidents of sexual and domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking to law enforcement authorities. Criminal and civil remedies are available in addition to the potential remedies that the College may provide.

In order to provide the best service to our students, faculty, and staff, the Title IX Coordinators, hearing officers, and investigators are required to participate in annual training. Not Any More: In order to comply with Title IX policy, the College requires that all students in a certificate or degree program take College Success Skills (SDV 100 or 101). In this course, students are required to successfully complete a video-based training program entitled Not Any More. It contains information on sexual harassment, sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking. Students must successfully complete the assessment with 80% accuracy. A certificate is generated after successful completion.
