Meet Presidential Ambassador Inessa Salas

For Inessa Salas Virginia Peninsula Community College is the first step in her drive to become a lawyer. While on the way to that goal, she is taking advantage of all the College has to offer, including the chance for leadership development.

A Newport News resident, Salas is working toward an Associate of Applied Science degree in Paralegal Studies and is one of five students serving as a Presidential Ambassador for the 2024-2025 academic year. The Presidential Ambassasor program allows participants to volunteer at events and engage with the college community while receiving mentorship from VPCC leaders and a $1,200 incentive.

She came to Hampton Roads from her native Colorado, where she graduated from Pueblo Central High School in 2016 and was inspired to enroll at VPCC last year. Here, Salas offers insights about her time at VPCC.

Why did you choose Paralegal Studies? I chose this major because I’ve always had a passion for law. Since I was young, I always remember that my dream was to become a lawyer. First step!

What are your academic and career goals? In the next five years, I see myself working in a family law firm as a paralegal while furthering my education at a four-year institution, and law school beyond that!

What clubs or activities are you involved with at the College and in your community? I am involved in Blossom Her and Intervarsity Christian fellowship. I participate in community activities such as assisting/volunteering at my church home when they need help. I am also active at my daughter’s school on PTA. I participate in community clean-up days, ensuring a beautiful earth for everyone to share.

How does participation in these activities impact you, particularly as you continue your education?Participating in these activities enhances my leadership skills and teamwork skills, which are very valuable for my college education. It helps me connect with and understand the needs of my community.

What do you take the most pride in as you further your education? I’m most proud of achieving high grades while being a full-time mom (of two daughters). It’s not easy to run a house, manage kids, and schoolwork but they are my motivation and I’m proud to achieve all of this with their eyes on me.

Are there any VPCC faculty or staff members who have inspired you on this higher education journey? I’d like to extend my gratitude to all the faculty and staff at the College. Your support and dedication to the students have made my journey here enjoyable and smooth. Thank you for creating such a welcoming and inspiring environment.

What family members do you want to acknowledge for supporting and influencing you? I'd like to mention my children for their constant inspiration, love, and support. My mother and her husband have been my pillars of strength, always encouraging me to pursue my goals. My mother instilled in me the values of hard work and perseverance. My father for his unwavering support and encouragement through this journey. My brothers are amazing motivators or ‘hype men’ and my grandmother for her wisdom and life lessons she has shared with me.
