Monday, August 12: New Faculty Luncheon

• Who Should Attend: All new faculty and staff who started at VPCC between April 1 and August 12 are required to attend; program/department chairs and vice presidents who supervise new faculty and staff are invited but not required to attend.

• Who Should Attend: All faculty and staff are required to attend; offices are closed until 1 p.m.

Friday, August 16: Faculty Mandatory Critical Topics

Faculty Forum

  • Lead POC: Michael Filsinger

  • Location: ODU Auditorium
  • Who should attend: All faculty ranked employees who are not members of another constituency group (CSSA, MLM, or President’s Cabinet) are welcome to attend.
  • Session Description: Faculty Senate will discuss priorities and focus areas for the year ahead.

Faculty Critical Topic: Accessibility

  • Lead POC: Donald Payton
  • Time: 1:30-2:25 p.m.
  • Location: PWDC Conference Room
  • Who should attend: All teaching faculty are required to attend; any administrative staff whose supervisor identifies this as a critical topic should attend.
  • Session Description: This workshop will focus on the basics of ADA and what the requirements are to offer accommodation in the classroom and beyond for students at VPCC. An overview will be presented with an opportunity for an informative Q & A session to follow.

Faculty Critical Topic: Freedom of Information Act

  • Lead POC: Steven Felker
  • Time: 2:30-2:55 p.m.
  • Location: PWDC Conference Room
  • Who should attend: All teaching faculty are required to attend; any administrative staff whose supervisor identifies this as a critical topic should attend.
  • Session Description: This session will provide a high-level overview and reminder of faculty and staff obligations related to the Freedom of Information Act. We will also discuss best practices to consider when communicating through VPCC or VCCS communications platforms.

Faculty Critical Topic: FERPA, Registrar Procedures, Financial Aid Procedures

  • Time: 3:00-3:40 p.m.

  • Who should attend: All teaching faculty are required to attend; any administrative staff whose supervisor identifies this as a critical topic should attend.
  • Session Description: During this workshop, we will provide a high-level overview of our responsibilities to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) as well as relevant Registrar & Financial Aid procedures.

Faculty Critical Topic: Title IX and Code of Conduct

  • Time: 3:45-4:30 p.m.
  • Location: PWDC Conference Room
  • Who should attend: All teaching faculty are required to attend; any administrative staff whose supervisor identifies this as a critical topic should attend.
  • Session Description: During this session, we will review the basic concepts and regulations related to Title IX and the expectations of all VPCC community members to uphold the requirements with the utmost care. Additionally, we will provide an overview of the VPCC Student Code of Conduct, particularly related to classroom expectations.

Monday, August 19: New Faculty Academy Meet and Greet

  • Who should attend: All new faculty are required to attend; anyone at the college interested in meeting and welcoming new faculty should attend.
  • Details: This opportunity is an informal open house to get to know the new faculty and welcome them to VPCC; light refreshments will be served.

Monday, August 19: Dual Enrollment Orientation

  • Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m.

  • Who should attend: All Dual Enrollment faculty are highly encouraged to attend.
  • Details: Join us to celebrate the start of a new academic year and engage with colleagues regarding dual enrollment courses and programs offered through Virginia Peninsula Community College. This event will review Dual Enrollment Processes and Procedures, familiarize attendees with campus processes and resources, and provide essential course and division-specific information.

Tuesday, August 20: Optional Safe Zone Training

  • Session Description: During this workshop, participants will gain the knowledge and skills needed to create a more inclusive environment for LGBTQIA+ community members to feel welcome; lunch will be served.

Thursday, August 29: Optional Green Zone Training

  • Who should attend: Participants must register in advance: https://forms.gle/6FimomvLVBS8Fc8E9 any faculty or staff members who want to learn more about creating inclusive environments for military affiliated students and community members should attend.
  • Session description: The VPCC Green Zone Training is a program to support military students on campus. This training will provide faculty and staff with information on how to make classrooms, offices, and the College welcoming for veterans. Experts from the VA Medical Center will present on PTSD, TBI, Veteran Suicide, and Military Sexual Trauma. Additionally, Brandie Weaver and David Lannon will provide training on interactions with veterans and how to nurture a veteran friendly environment. Upon completion, each participant will be considered a safe place for student veterans to discuss issues. A Green Zone sticker will be provided to display so students are aware you are Green Zone Trained. You will also earn a free copy of the book, Combat to College: Applying the Military Mentality to the Classroom: How To Succeed As A Student Veteran by John H. Davis. Lunch will be served.

“Faculty Friday” is planned by the Division of Academic Affairs and occurs monthly. Please look for detailed schedules and information provided by the division or your academic department leadership.
