Virginia Peninsula gave me the knowledge, skills and hands-on experience I needed to become a great nurse.

After earning a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy from William & Mary and working nearly 18 years as a law enforcement officer with Campus Police at his alma mater, David "Hersh" Smith took a leap in 2004.

He enrolled in Virginia Peninsula Community College's School of Nursing to work toward an Associate Degree in Nursing. Having worked two part-time jobs while in school and overcome other challenges, he started a rewarding career as a nurse on the Cardiopulmonary Care Center Unit at Bon Secours' Richmond Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville, Virginia in June 2007 upon his graduation. "[Virginia Peninsula] gave me the knowledge, skills and hands-on experience I needed to become a great nurse," he said.

While at Virginia Peninsula Smith completed clinical trials at area hospitals and was also involved in the community as a member of the Health Care Advocates, a Nursing Club that groups first-year Nursing students. During his final year at Virginia Peninsula, he also served as president of the Future Nurses of America, a Nursing Club for second-year Nursing students.
