Desiree Jones plans to transfer to Old Dominion University or Christopher Newport University to seek a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. Thomas Nelson Community College is the perfect springboard. "I talk to a lot of people and they help me look toward the future. I have gotten a lot of good advice about classes I need to take and things like that. This helps me work harder," she said.
A guard/forward on the women's basketball team at Thomas Nelson, Jones enrolled in 2014 intent on establishing solid footing for the next level of higher education. The decision is paying off given her 3.4 grade point average. "This was the best choice for me. It's giving me a chance to really improve," said the Newport News resident.
Playing college basketball is also a plus. She said the experiences sports afford boost her confidence, lets her establish friendships and provides opportunities to travel. Between classes and athletics, Jones works part time in retail.
